I voted that I hadn't thought about it, but have only closed the lids with kittens in the house, and that's been about 8 years ago. I close the lids for about 24 hours after cleaning them, just to get all the residual cleaner flushed out of them.

I live in the country and have caught my dogs drink out of puddles that would make me sick. The toilet water they love to drink is far better than the things they find outside.

I've only had 2 cats that liked to drink from the toilet bowl. It really doesn't bother me, but again, I've seen feral cats drink out of much worse.

Perhaps I'm not so squeamish anymore after living with pets for 50 years.

i always make sure it's down because Wolfie is a water cat. he loves to play in water. all their waterbowls are on trays since he likes to wash his paws in them and always empties them

I'm not concerned about the cats drinking out of the toilet so much as having Miss Patchwillow fall in. I always tell guests that whoever leaves the lid up gets to give Miss Patchwillow a bath when, not if, she falls in.

If you aren't concerned about her drinking the water, why would she need a bath if she fell in? If it's clean enough to drink, why wouldn't it be clean enough to "swim" in if she fell in?

Noodles took 2 dunks within the first few weeks we had her. The second time I was just saying to my mother (who had just used our bathroom) to be sure she put the lid down because Noodles had jumped in the other day...and *kersplash*! LOL! Mom still leaves the lid up here from time to time and I'll find wet paw prints on the seat! But it grosses me out. DH had 2 older sisters and was well trained to put the lid down. Hopefully when we potty train our little one it won't be an issue.

Hmm, there's not really a good option for me in the poll. I actually have thought about it, and on the whole, I've decided that I like leaving the lid up. Tiny is my only kitty who has ever shown the least interest in the toilet, and even that is very rare. What I have thought about, though, is what would happen if I were to die at work one day. We all hear those stories about how some guy died of a heart attack and nobody noticed for 3 or 4 days. I'd like to think that, if that should happen to me, my cats would at least have access to water until somebody found them. I try to keep a rather large water bowl filled in the kitchen, but, just in case, the toilet would provide a secondary supply. If I used one of those toilet-bowl cleaners that is actively harmful it would be a different story, but I don't. I tend to doubt that a regularly flushed toilet presents much of a hazard to cats, considering all the other things they do, like licking their butts.

I always make sure the seat is down before I even flush, why spew more germs into the air. Years ago, when Maia was a kitten she did a bathroom charge and fell into the toilet after someone left the seat up
. So obviously this just made me more critical........ I honestly can't stand it, I hate it
! At work there is 2 single bathrooms, both toilets are open, lidless, drives me crazy

When Oliver was a kitten, he ran in the bathroom because he had to see what was going on. Before my (then) husband could stop him, he accidently peed on his ear. Then he called out "honey, come wash the kitty.

Yes, I absolutely keep the toilet closed.

I have never needed to cover the toilet seat. Autumn never bothers with that and neither did my Angel Kitty Misty.

For some reason, public toilets are not allowed to have lids. Also they need to have that opening in the front of the seat. I have no idea why this is true, but I knew someone with a small business, with a normal household toilet (the kind with a lid and no opening), and the inspector wrote her up on it. It's the law

I can't STAND to have our toilet seats up. We have friends that have dogs and they leave their seats up all the time. Drives me nuts. The dogs go in there, drink from the toilet (clean or not) and then want to lick you? ICK! Not so much!
Anyway, Rocket is known for tearing through the house and not paying attention to things, and he's fallen into the toilet 1 time to many. (only once but still) so we make sure to keep the lids down here.

I always put the toilet lid down.....and have my husband "trained" to do the same!!!!! We will actually sneak into the bathroom after guests to be sure they put it down. I actually put a sign on the lid, but some people evidently didn't read it and have left it up even with the sign!!!! Maybe I'm a bit OCD but it drives me crazy!!!!

Yepper.....both DH and I make sure our toilet lids are down at all times. Remember right after we got Mollipop? I no sooner stood up one night than she tried to jump over the toilet and splashed right in! At 4:00 in the morning. So there we were, me trying to give Miss Pop a quick bath.

When we have company, I'll walk into the bathroom several times, just to ensure the lid is in place.

When we have a huge gathering in the summer, I'll post a note in the bathroom that says something like: "Please make sure the toilet lid is down! Thanks!" I've had a couple people make comments, but most of our guests also have pets and they know what it's like.

I'm paranoid when it comes to the furkids.

But what is the fascination these animals have for drinking out of the toilet? If I had the money, I would invest in producing a toilet that bubbled clean fresh water at all times. I am sure both of my cats would spend their time on the cushioned seat I would provide them!

I always make sure the toilet seat is down and even do one step further. The door to the washroom is always closed. My daughter has on occasion played in the toilet water and flushed a toy down there as well

Nuh uh...might give me away!
What's funny to me is that DH is the one meticulous about keeping the cover down, because he doesn't like going into a bathroom to wash his hands and having to look at the toilet water.

Also, we tend to just keep the bathroom doors themselves closed, because Oscar LOVES the sink, and we pretty much don't like to have to clean cat fur out of it every day.

So, we do keep the covers down, but for the most part, the cats really don't have access unless someone lets them visit.

For two bathroom, we keep the doors closed, so it doesn't matter if the seat is up or down, for the last bathroom, we try to keep the seat down, but we keep the door open because Stinkpot loves to play in the tub. None of the cats we have ever had have ever tried to drink out of the toilet, but Stinkpot has fallen in before. We never had a problem with anything around the house until HE arrived, and he certainly lives up to his name
(but I wouldn't change him for the world!!
