Do you monitor your Toilet seat covers?

I'm not talking about men that leave the seats up, I am talking about the cover that can keep your cat from drinking out of the toilet. Do you always make sure the cover is down to keep your cats out of the toilet? Both of my cats would rather drink out of the toilet. We have four toilets and four big bowls of water by each toilet. Should anybody (like guests) not put the cover down, the cats are in for a treat.

Nice to see you, well not see you but you know what I mean I am quite lucky my cats have never shown an interest in the toilet, Candy likes the bath and the sink and I have to be careful when I run a bath and not leave it unattended as she has a habit of walking round the edge of the bathe when its filling and I always worry that she could fall in when there is just hot water going in, so I either put both taps on together or close the door if I have to leave the bathroom.x

I have always kept the toilet seat down. Mostly to prevent anything from accidentally falling in, off the sink vanity or the back of the toilet. When I first got Lola, she was fascinated by the flush, and would come at a dead run to watch the water swirl. I guess the fascination has worn off, since she hasn't done that in a long time. They are still interested in watching the bath tub fill. Lola is the only one who hasn't fallen in when walking around the edge to watch. (Long haired cats + bath water = bubbly, soaking mess all through the house!)

(I voted absolutley always down, but I sometimes forget. That's usually when my glasses fall off the back of the toilet...)

Making sure the lids are down is second nature to me, having had several pets who liked drinking out of toilet bowls and having heard horror stories of kittens drowning in them.
Always. I don't want to chance anything happening to them
post #6 of 38
I have only 2 or 3 that go into the room where the bathroom is but I do try to keep the lids closed. I'd hate to get a lick from them after the "sampled" the water.

I don't have that problem which is good since the cover broke off the toilet seat. Guess I should get a new one, huh.

I never thought about it. However, Parker and Sami don't even go in the bathroom on their own. Buddy will look in the toilet but doesn't drink from it. At least not that I've seen.

Daisy has fallen in while drinking from the toilet when someone accidentally left it up! Big splash all over the bathroom, wet cat running thru apartment....

So yes - I keep mine covered!

Yes, the seat is down when not being used.

I deplore the thought of an animal drinking from the toilet bowl, no matter who clean the bowl looks. There is still bacteria and possibly residue from cleaners.

I would never drink from a toilet, and I wouldn't let anyone else either, so I wouldn't let my animals drink from it either.

The way I look at it is this: If I wouldn't let a human drink from the container, it's not fit for an animal to drink from either.

Bijou and Mika have never bothered with the toilet so it's not an issue for me.

I grew up with a dog who LOVED to drink out of the toilet if the lid was left up, so after stepping in water on the floor and sitting in water on the seat from said dog drinking out of the toilet, I quickly learned to put the lid down when I finished using the potty. Now, it's just second nature to lower the lid when finished. Good thing since my kitties often use the toilet seat as a launching pad up to the bathroom counter.

I make sure the toilet lids in both bathrooms are closed at all times. I don't want a kitty trying to jump in or a pup trying to drink from the water. I use chemicals to clean my toilet with, so it is not safe for them to drink that water (that, and the ick factor!). All of my guests are usually very understanding when I ask them to place the lid down when they're finished in the restroom. I've never had an issue with it.

I don't have a problem with pets drinking out of the toilet---I don't find it gross at all (it's clean, fresh water all the time, ceramic bowl, fewer bacteria than the kitchen sink, etc.), in fact I used to leave it open on purpose so I wouldn't have to worry if their bowl was empty! But whenever there are kittens in the house, it needs to be closed for safety reasons. Plus, a few of the kitties have developed the habit of throwing their toys in the water and fishing them out, and stepping in puddles all over the house does not make me happy. So now it's closed all the time.

My toilet seats are up, but the bathroom doors are always closed.

Otherwise Wesley would lick and bite the shower curtain, and Buttercup might play with the paper roll.

We leave ours open all the time, not on purpose, just out of habit I guess. One of our dogs likes to drink out of the toilet, personally, I don't really care because he's not a licky dog and we don't use chemicals to clean ours. Our cat has shown no interest in the toilet.

One thing about having water bowls beside the toilet - if you live with men, remember that sometimes they have bad aim... and some may get in the bowls, lol. We had one beside the toilet until Mike mentioned that we should maybe move it because he had "splashed" into it a few times.

Don't have to worry, because the bathroom door is shut at all times, to keep the kittens out of there.

I keep the bathroom doors shut at all times, so the cats can't even get in there.

My puppy likes to chew on the toilet paper so I keep the bathroom door closed. I actually keep all the doors closed (computer room, spare room, basement) so the animals can't go in there. The only one that stays open is my bedroom door because one of my cats scratches the door if it gets closed.

ever since Flash went swimming in the toilet the lid has been down on it i dont know who got the bigger shock us or her

I voted that I hadn't thought about it, but have only closed the lids with kittens in the house, and that's been about 8 years ago. I close the lids for about 24 hours after cleaning them, just to get all the residual cleaner flushed out of them.

I live in the country and have caught my dogs drink out of puddles that would make me sick. The toilet water they love to drink is far better than the things they find outside.

I've only had 2 cats that liked to drink from the toilet bowl. It really doesn't bother me, but again, I've seen feral cats drink out of much worse.

Perhaps I'm not so squeamish anymore after living with pets for 50 years.

i always make sure it's down because Wolfie is a water cat. he loves to play in water. all their waterbowls are on trays since he likes to wash his paws in them and always empties them

I'm not concerned about the cats drinking out of the toilet so much as having Miss Patchwillow fall in. I always tell guests that whoever leaves the lid up gets to give Miss Patchwillow a bath when, not if, she falls in.

If you aren't concerned about her drinking the water, why would she need a bath if she fell in? If it's clean enough to drink, why wouldn't it be clean enough to "swim" in if she fell in?

Noodles took 2 dunks within the first few weeks we had her. The second time I was just saying to my mother (who had just used our bathroom) to be sure she put the lid down because Noodles had jumped in the other day...and *kersplash*! LOL! Mom still leaves the lid up here from time to time and I'll find wet paw prints on the seat! But it grosses me out. DH had 2 older sisters and was well trained to put the lid down. Hopefully when we potty train our little one it won't be an issue.

Hmm, there's not really a good option for me in the poll. I actually have thought about it, and on the whole, I've decided that I like leaving the lid up. Tiny is my only kitty who has ever shown the least interest in the toilet, and even that is very rare. What I have thought about, though, is what would happen if I were to die at work one day. We all hear those stories about how some guy died of a heart attack and nobody noticed for 3 or 4 days. I'd like to think that, if that should happen to me, my cats would at least have access to water until somebody found them. I try to keep a rather large water bowl filled in the kitchen, but, just in case, the toilet would provide a secondary supply. If I used one of those toilet-bowl cleaners that is actively harmful it would be a different story, but I don't. I tend to doubt that a regularly flushed toilet presents much of a hazard to cats, considering all the other things they do, like licking their butts.

I always make sure the seat is down before I even flush, why spew more germs into the air. Years ago, when Maia was a kitten she did a bathroom charge and fell into the toilet after someone left the seat up. So obviously this just made me more critical........ I honestly can't stand it, I hate it! At work there is 2 single bathrooms, both toilets are open, lidless, drives me crazy..........

Oh my gosh, I absolutely keep the toilet seat covers down all the time for safety reasons. DH does too. No kitty baths in the toilet

When Oliver was a kitten, he ran in the bathroom because he had to see what was going on. Before my (then) husband could stop him, he accidently peed on his ear. Then he called out "honey, come wash the kitty.

Yes, I absolutely keep the toilet closed.

I have never needed to cover the toilet seat. Autumn never bothers with that and neither did my Angel Kitty Misty.
