hello

few weeks ago i got a germanshepherd an adult female my cat always waits outside of the room the shepherd stays in because im in there

they have met many many times i never let them touch tho for ov reasons

cat is always much more aggressive than the dog the shepherd is use to cats and has a soft spot for them which is a big reason why i bought this shepherd

well today the shepherd got out of her room and went jumping around the house i went after her she saw the cat and ran right by her me chasing behind the cat just looked at her and ran after her also

well we got to my bedroom the cat was all puffed up standing on my chair ready to fight the shepherd was laying on my bed acting goofy then the shepherd got up and went towards my cat and touched her bum really really gently with her nose the cat hissed but didnt swat or anything and remained in place at that point i got a hold of the shepherd

have they already worked out some kind of truce or something that i am not aware about?

the cat clawing at my dog is what worried me because a claw on the nose can hurt or on the eye which in turn can make my dog turn into a cat hater but my cat never once tried to claw her

does my cat know shes not in danger? she just hissed no spitting no swiping no fighting.

high possible they can be friends? this shepherd does not like dogs or coyotes or anything like that and wont allow them on our property and my cat loves to sun herself outside if one day maybe they could share the yard together?

It is entirely possible they DO have already a truce, and this was a sort of war game play - like is quite common among both cats and dogs.

Even if not, it is clear they are now ripe fo next steps in becoming pals.

Let them be together. Superwised at first, not necessary supervised later.

Make sure there is good possibilities for leaving the place if wished. So the cat wont feel forced to fight for life, nor punish - but can go away, or jump up on some shelf.
And the dog the same - can go away.

And yes, it is common the cat in such household is the alpha cat - in a cat + dog pair. Or if you want - such households work best if the cat is the alpha compared with the dog or dogs.

Im entirely sure by what you describe they will become good friends with time. Sooner more probably than later.
And yes, the dog will protect her from hostile dogs and coyotes. Dogs are usually protective for their pack, thus - she will protect the cat against foreign threats even is they wont become very good pals.

So is my thinking here and now.

Good luck!

IIRC, german shepherds are one of the breeds with a high prey and herding drive, which means they are inclined to chase and kill small furry animals like squirrels or cats for that matter.

I know people that have cats and uncaged birds in the same house too, and they get along just fine, but I'd always be worried of the bird wiggling just right when kitty is in a really excited state and likewise w/ the german shepherd to the cat.

I've just read far too many horror stories of dogs w/ high prey drives that were fine with cats for months and then the owner hears a rustling only to find the dog walking with their cat in his mouth. Instinct isn't a thought process, but a hard wiring, and you just never know if the conditions are right for a trigger event where the cat is startled and fearful of something and runs from the dog and acting just like frightened prey.

It's possible they worked out a truce. My grandparents always had siameses and german shepherds. As far as I know all of each of them got along. The last siamese and german shepherd (the 2 I knew) were friends. They ate together, they didn't fight each other.

This will not turn your dog into a cat hater. Your dog will learn not to mess with your cat. When the cat runs, the dog will chase. But if the cat turns on the dog, that dog will think twice about doing it again. However, this does not mean your cat and dog should not be supervised when together.

Pipsqueak is a holy terror when anything in the house gets out-of-control, including the dogs. Two older JRT dogs. He will charge at them full speed if they bark too loud or are making toooo much noise. I have been lucky that the dogs have never retaliated or attacked back. I honestly think the dogs just learn to back down when the "white tazmania devil" emerges. Other than that, Pipsqueak loves the dogs and they are very good friends. Pipsqueak is the
of the home. I just try to manage the problems and diffuse them before Pipsqueak has a chance to react. He is definitely a boss cat.
