Hi everyone,

I've been looking at the Kindle 3G + WiFi, my friend from school has one and whenever he's on Facebook, it seems he's on his Kindle. I've asked him a few questions on it and know a little, he said that even though he ordered it through Amazon, it can connect to our power and through USB which is good and surprising since we're in Australia. Does anyone here have one and is it worth the money? I also want to use it when I go away on trips to talk to you all since it has free 3G.

Thanks in advance.

I'm in the USA, not Australia, but I love, love, love my Kindle! The battery life is long, you can charge it with USB or outlet here (I don't know how your outlets differ from ours, or even if they do). And it holds thousands of books. I got my Kindle when it was pretty much the only ereader out there, so I don't know how others compare. And the Kindle is already WAY cheaper than when I got it, but I've used it enough, it's worth it.

I think the Kindle was the only "cutting-edge" technology I've ever been on.
I listened to cassette tapes into the '90's, I didn't get a DVD player until like 6 years ago, my parents had cell phones before I did, I didn't get a digital camera until just a couple of years ago, just got my first smart phone a couple months ago...

I bought the Kindle3G+WiFi from Amazon about a month ago. I love it!! The battery last forever on a charge. It can charge through the computers USB cord or in the electric outlet. They send both cords..
I haven't even tried the internet capability on it to connect to facebook..I bought it for reading...I think its well worth the money.
It was a gift to myself from money I saved when I stopped smoking 2 months ago!

Right now I am using my pandigital "7 inch e-reader to surf the web and stuff it uses wifi also. I like what I am using better than a kindle and it has books from Barnes and Noble you can get samples of and read whole books too.

I got a Kindle about a month ago. It's only the wi-fi and now I wish I'd gotten 3G but I still love it. I've really only used it for reading and I'm just burning through the books!
There is one down side to it though. I suffer from agoraphobia and social anxiety. I do take meds for it which makes it "tolerable" for me to work and leave the house. I noticed that people will leave you alone if you're reading a book, but they think it's ok to interrupt you to ask questions about your Kindle!

I have one and I LOOOOOVEEE it!!! I use it every day! I don't have the 3G; just wi-fi. I just download few new things before we travel. I would suggest getting a cover and light too. I got mine later and it's nice to just make sure you protect it. I've found lots of reading material for free or very cheap. The time I had to deal with customer service they were excellent. One of the big things that sold me was that Amazon has more reading material in my favorite genera (sp?) (inspirational romance) than Barnes & Noble had for the Nook. I do appreciate how light it is; especially now that I keep it in the cover. I find it easy to read from and it's so much easier to travel now with that instead of 3 paperbacks. I don't do magazines on it though. I like to have them in color and leaving them in the bathroom. hehe....

I don't have the Kindle, but I own its equivalent, the Nook 3G + Wifi. It's not the Nook color as that would require me to pay for AT&T 4G service. But, I believe the Nook version I have is the equal to the Kindle you're interested in.

As far as the e-reader goes, I love my Nook. I don't know how I lived without it. Seriously. The battery charge is excellent and I love the book selection I get from Barnes & Noble and other sites. Where the Wifi is concerned, I don't use it too often. I have my laptop for that. But, I do appreciate that I can check in on Facebook and other sites (including TCS) when I'm out and about -- especially when I'm sitting somewhere and waiting. I also like that I can type status updates on FB and even post here. It's certainly not easier than using my laptop for responding to messages or whatnot, but it gets the job done. I don't have a cell that includes a data plan so having the Nook has been a lifesaver. I've heard the Kindle is very similar and have heard nothing but rave reviews about it. Like I said, I love my e-reader. I'd recommend one to anyone who loves to read and likes the portability of a free Wifi.

I am in the US, but even if I had not received the Nook as a gift, I'd definitely have found the cost to be worthwhile. I think it's the best tech item I have (and I don't have many) and just can't speak highly enough of it. I wasn't sure about everything at first, but I couldn't live without it now.

As far as I know, you can't buy books from Barnes & Noble outside North America. I know you can't in Europe, unlike for the Kindle. I've downloaded e-books from Amazon.com in several European countries using 3G, but the basic web browser doesn't always work everywhere. When the Kindle 2 came out, people in Australia had to supply their own plug adapter, whereas customers in Europe got one with the Kindle. If you want e-books from sourcces other than Amazon you have to download them to your computer and transfer them via USB, which is really simple.

I had one for my birthday and LOVE it! I didn't have the 3G version as I have a 3G phone and wireless broadband at home so didn't see the need.

I'm taking it on the cruise with me and hope it will keep me entertained for the long haul flights there and back too. I've also sent all of the travel documents that we have regarding the cruise as pdfs to the kindle, so I have all those electronically on hand too

Somebody mentioned before that a cover and light would also be good. I agree! I have a gorgeous purple Belkin cover and love it - it has a great pocket that the light and/or USB lead can fit into as well. I'm expecting the light will come in useful on the night flight (return journey) as I just don't sleep on planes. So I'll be able to read without disturbing everyone else. I got a Mighty Brite light and am really happy with that - I looked at the covers that kindle make which have a light incorporate but wasn't happy with the quality or reach of the light.

I wants. But I want an iPad (I know but I have a Mac and an iPhone) because things would be more seamless. Plus, I am a huge Angry Birds addict and have already bought/got for free many, many apps (and music) through my iPhone/MBP which I could use on an iPad.

But I'm not investing quite yet.

I think I have the same cover too!
We have great taste! I use my light every night. I like to read on the couch and there just isn't a good light unless I have more than 1 in the room lit.

I'm not sure that I have the same cover as you all do. I do have a slate blue leather cover with the light. I would totally recommend the cover w/the light. I use it when I want to read in bed and not disturb my DH. A reading light on the night stand would bother him, but the light on the Kindle cover shines only on the screen. It's awesome!!

Last year at Christmas, DH asked me if I thought I might want a Kindle. The thing is, I love having a book in my hand. But we're running out of space...I have no more room for books anymore. Once the basement is completely finished, he has promised me shelves, shelves and more shelves. But I think I'm going to ask Santa for a Kindle this year.

You all seem to love your Kindles and Nooks!

The main reason I got a Kindle was to save space, but what I now like best about it is being able to have a new book to read in just a few minutes without having to leave the house.

I thought I would miss holding a book; but so far I don't. I like being able to adjust the font on the kindle too. I may still read a paperback from time to time; but for most reading I love my kindle. I have a few childcare books I've bought hard copies of; just because those kinds of books I like to be able to flip back and forth in them when I need to.

Thanks for your replies everyone, I am definitely getting one. My birthday is in a month and I think I'll order myself one. I've read up on Kindle's "hidden features" such as a calculator and hidden games. It's almost like a black and white iPad
I can't wait 'til it arrives!

I hope you enjoy it! I got one after my birthday last year too. If you can; get yourself a cover and a light too. I somehow damaged my screen (one line looks wrong; not enough that its really noticeable) before I got one. Wish I had just got it in the beginning!
