I guess that finger's pointed at me, so I'll do my best to answer.

Cindy's board name was ckblv. We shared some ground politically and although I don't know her personally, I always considered her a friend on the board. She was a really active poster in IMHO and for me, an interesting one. Although I've slacked off on posting, I still visit and read from time to time. I noticed Cindy was not on any recent threads, but thought that maybe like myself, she just had to let it go for a while. Since this thread started I've been contacted by others off the board to bring me up to date.

As you can see, I've been a member for 5 years and have close to a 1000 posts. I've been active in both IMHO and cat threads in the past, sometimes with brain engaged, sometimes not. Even though I haven't posted recently, I still have the site bookmarked and will read a few posts now and then. Have to admit, I missed the big skeery mother of all threads though.

Sometimes you just come to a point where you don't want to talk about it anymore, maybe for a while, maybe forever. So I took a break from IMHO. As for the cats...like I mentioned earlier, I now have 23. I could probably add to a dozen threads here daily with what goes on, but that also came to a point where it was more necessary to do the work than talk about it. For those of you with 1 or 2 beloved kitties, multiply the work, the cost, the joy and the heartbreak tenfold and there you have it. Ultimately, my choice.

So......I pay a visit to IHMO because I'm curious to see what board members are saying about Libya and in doing so I noticed the forum just seems different. I'm sorry if you really viewed it as a criticism, I thought it was more like an observation. The responses seem to acknowledge that it has changed though. Why would I care? I don't know. I am still a member. And Cinder is still, well....Cinder.

Here is my take on religiosity and how it gets expressed... this goes for Judeo-Christian, Muslim...b/c those are my experiences.

The more orthodox the belief, the more insistent they are that they hold the only key to religious beliefs.

ie: Orthodox Jews v. Reform Jews... the ultra orthodox in many cases don't even consider someone like me to BE Jewish b/c we don't practice the faith the way THEY do. Therefore I must be a heathen.

Muslim extremists v. moderates... pretty much the same thing. And I live in a heavily Muslim community (Detroit)

Fervent, born again. ultra conservative Christians v. more moderate views, like friends of mine who are southern presbyterian. Of course, there has been infighting for who knows how long between the various Christian faiths.

Oh I have been told by die-hard Christians that b/c I am Jew I am going to hell unless I convert. Not on here... but in my life. That's fine if that's what YOU believe, but I believe differently. And I know how I live my life, I embrace the modern interpretation of the tenet of Tikkun Olam, Golden Rule... whatever you want to call it. I usually say, I am sorry you feel that way about me. And go about my business.

ETA: Oh and I am also glad/happy for people who have a deep, abiding, fervent, unwavering belief in their faith. I think it gives them structure, comfort and direction. Less questioning and more accepting of belief. I also tell them that. For me, I am more of a questioning type.

Oh, and I don't miss Cindy (ckblv) either. We got into it a few times. And I also stopped posting here b/c of the heat and vitriol.

Thanks for answering my question. I asked because I wanted to know. If you reread your first post, it does indeed come across as criticism as the implications are all negative.

I understand taking a break. I take breaks from TCS and many other forums on occasion. I just found it odd that you would come back only to criticize. Of course you are entitled to your opinion. I wasn't saying you aren't. I just wondered why is all.

Considering recent events I thought, wow...I ought to check and see what my old friends on TCS have to say about this. Nothing. Amazing. Did you all just decide to restrict your discussions to your kitties? I guess that's the purpose of the site, so it makes sense. But it just seems like the fire that used to burn here died. <again the implication is something bad> I actually imagined what Cindy would have to say about recent events.

Maybe, like me, you just burned out, got tired of an argument that never ends. For some reason, it just seems odd that everyone quit talking. Anyway, I've got 23 cats now. My brother built the most amazing deck for them and someday I still hope to share it with you. Hope all is well with everyone.
Forums change atmospherically all the time. I see threads like this in other places frequently, and they usually do have a critical tone.

Can't please everyone, all the time, right?

Like others have said, if you want to controversial discussions, by all means start them!

I don't see Cinder's post as critical. I disagree with your conclusions that she was implying something bad. I think her point has been proven, actually. Compare the amount of responses in this thread to the one I started called "radiation threat" in breaking mews (which is a part of IMO). Also, I started a thread yesterday in IMO that has yet to be responded to at all. It's about Vermont and the single payer system for health care. In the time Cinder is referring to, both of those threads would likely have been hot threads. I agree with her that there is not as much passion. It might only last awhile, but it is the truth for today.

True! This thread has wandered far away and back again.

Actually, I don't feel this thread has been controversial. I think for the most part it has given us a chance to discuss how we feel, not argue. Christianity did come up and it is always controversial, as is politics. I stand firm in my faith and I realize other people stand firm in what they believe in. I respect that. From this thread I gather that people who are not Christians respect my rights too as long as I don't critize or judge them. Heaven forbid.
As for some of the older threads that were so heated, I enjoyed them, and I will probably be right in the middle of them if someone gets the nerve to start a real one.

I agree with blueyedgirl. We've discussed religion and hurt feelings in regard to it and I think things have been remarkably civil.

yeah which makes a change haha haha I've actually enjoyed this topic reading it and putting in my 2 cents from time to time

I think this may be one of the first (or at least few) threads where Christianity has been much of the topic and it hasn't gotten a bit rough or even borderline offensive... But then the mods may be trimming quite a bit since I haven't followed the thread much.

No, I have read the posts and they have all been very civil.
