first time cat owner, made some mistakes a got a diva cat

I have had dogs my entire life, with my recent move in a small apartment I decided it was time for a kitten! I rescued one from the humane society, he was found as an abandoned orphan. I took him to the vet got him all the shots he needed, neutered him, and took care a nasty case of conjunctivitis that he had. This cost about $350, which just made me chuckle because I had spent that much on my pup in the last 4 years. But I didnt mind, he is such a sweet little guy and want to give him a good home. Now to the problems

1) He wont use the litter box, well use it regularly. When he first came home he was using the litter box just fine, he would have an accident here or there but I chalked that up to being a new kitten. I made a HUGE mistake, after about a month, I got him a new litter box, a bigger one with a hood. (First time cat owner cut me a break :/ ) How do I make him use the litter box again, ive tried everything. Obviously, i removed the new litter box and brought the old one back, that didnt work. I made sure the box was super clean, cleaning it multiple times a day. I would take him there multiple times a day especially after eating, and scratch his paw in the litter. It is in a nice quiet place with no kids, loud noises, or other animals. Ive tried switching his litter and ive tried pellets because thats what they used at the humane society, same result. He will use is sometimes..he will pee in it but poop all over the house for a couple of weeks, then sometimes he will poop in it but not pee, despite i clean it basically right after use. he also pees in bed, like he will just be laying in bed and pee the bee and himself. and another weird thing, he eats the litter. im using tidycat small spaces. when i place him in the litter box he will eat the little, not eat poop like dogs sometimes do, but eat his little ive never heard of that..and speaking of diet. He will not eat dry food now, i gave him wet food for about 7 days because we got science diet wet food samples from the vet, i didnt want to waste them. after they ran out i went back to his Iams dry food, he wouldnt eat it, i left it out for days at a time and he wouldnt eat it, so i went and got science diet dry food, he still would eat it. the second i open a can of wet food he was meowing and gobbled it right down. is there a way i can ever get him back on dry food? any advice would be great!!

Wet food is better for him anyway, so if you can afford it, don't worry! He doesn't need dry food.

Eating litter is sometimes a sign of anemia or a mineral deficiency. I'd ask the vet to run some blood tests for that just to be sure he's totally healthy. The wetting in the bed is also not normal. I'd run that by the vet as well.

How old is he now?

As for the litter, how big is the box? Cats don't like to be cramped in there. Try putting out a second box, you can even put it right next to the first box if he likes the location. Some cats don't like to pee and poop in the same litterbox. You said it's in a quiet area. . .is it too far out of the way? Many kitties don't like to go too far to find the box.

Most cats like unscented sand-like litter best. Tidy Cats does have a fairly strong scent, maybe his nose is sensitive. Dr. Elsey's clumping clay litter (found at Petsmart) is a commonly recommended brand, but I found a very nice unscented clumping litter at my local grocery store (their store brand) for much cheaper. Just look around a bit, I'm sure you can find an unscented brand. If that doesn't work, get some Cat Attract litter (also at Petsmart). It's good stuff.

He may need to be confined to a small room with only his litterbox as a potty option for retraining. And, it sounds counterintuitive, but try not keeping his litterbox super clean. Try scooping only once a day or once every other day, so that his scent is strong for him to come back to. And, every time you find poop outside the box, put it in the box--don't just throw it away. That will give him the idea of going in the box.

I am comparatively new to cat ownership, and wanted to congratulate you on getting a kitten. We got Calvin around thanksgiving and hobbes this february and, although they have both had a lot of health/ food issues, they've been a joy to have. There are others on this forum who are way more knowledgeable that I am but I can start off with certain things:
1) usually when cats/kittens stop using the litter box, there can be a medical concern. Call your vet and discuss this. My vet always asks me when I call him about anything if the kittens are using their box since this is a major issue.
2) I did move my kitties to closed/ hooded litter boxes - I totally understand you wanting to and some cats adjust well. I had placed the new closed box beside the open and then saw that Calvin started using the closed more and more. That's when I removed the open one. I did the exact same thing will Hobbes and he took to the closed one too. So on the mail level and I 2 closed boxes and both use both boxes with more or less similar frequency. You have done the right thing by removing the hooded one now and once your kitty starts reusing the little box, you can try to reintroduce the closed one the way I did but that's for later, of course.
3) What you you cleaning the affected places with? We had this issue once and used what others recommended. I went to petsmart and got Stink Free enzyme cleaner and a black light to find any pee. The other product can be found online and many swear by it is NOk Out. But you have to use an enzyme cleaner or the kitty will go there again. Btw, is your kitty declawed? Often declawed kitties have trouble digging the litter and hence go out of the box
4) Wet food, from what I understand from my kitties preferences, is tastier than dry and way better for kitties. So it seems your kitty is smart and knows what's better for her health. I started off giving wet food twice a day to my kitties and free feeding dry - which they grazed through the day. Then I moved to keepig out limited amount of dry and now I give them a little dry since they like to munch once in a while but 1 of my kitties does not do well on dry at all and now they get 80% wet and 20% dry. As far as food goes you will find invaluable tips in the section on nutrition. A good quality food , though may cost a little more, will often be cheaper in the long run keeping vet costs low. Also Science Diet is not the best kind (though expensive) if you see the ingredients.
I hope your kitty troubles are resolved soon.

I am a new cat owner, too (we've had Kittica since Thanksgiving).

Our cat uses two litterboxes all the time - she poops in one and pees in the other one, for the most part. Every once in a while she shifts back and forth with what she does where, but mostly is consistent. They are on the upper level of the house, right at the top of the staircase and she's okay with that, even though we all live on the lower level only at the moment.

Welcome to The Cat Site. Sure hope we can help you. First off, it might be the location of your litter box. Even though you think the location is not a prob., it might be a prob for the kitten. Keep that box there and add another open box somewhere else in the house. Maybe where he is pooping the most. ALSO add another open box next to the original box. Alot of cats like to pee in one box and poop in the other box. Don't know why, but they do.

If your kitten is eating litter, get it to the vet. This could be related to the pooping out of the box too. And, I would keep your cat on the canned/wet food. Much better for healthy urinary tract function as cat's really don't drink enough water so wet food is better.

Much luck to you and keep us posted

I've never heard of a young cat, without something like a spine injury, that would just lay and pee on themselves like that. Something is very wrong here and your cat needs to go back to the vet.

First of all, welcome to TCS, minicatlady!
At first I was thinking of the usual; adding another litter box, getting a larger box or changing the location, trying another new litter, but as strange_wings says above, the fact he just urinates where he is is a huge concern. Cats are extremely clean animals and it's against their instincts to have their waste close to them, let alone underneath and on themselves. That combined with the fact that he's eating the litter says to me he needs a vet visit.

IMHO your cat is not a Diva, instead, it needs a vet ASAP...
