I'm very puzzled with my cat's health at the moment.
Background: He is almost 5 years old short haired Bombay-ish male. He is being fed good food (Blue).

His problem about a year ago is now what is happening again. He throws up periodically. He does not throw up every day. He threw up today after being fine for a week, but last week he threw up twice (monday and wednesday). Before that... he hadn't thrown up for a couple of months. Every time he throws up it is different. Sometimes it is right after he eats, I assume because he eats quickly, but there are times that he doesn't eat for hours and then throws up. he does not throw up hairballs, most of it is food in various stages of digestion. He is on a hairball/weight control formula to give him extra fiber to help pass anything that might be making him throw up. He is given hairball treats and cream with active ingredients like malt syrup... which should solve the problem.... but hasn't.

He has been to the vet, the vet palpated his stomach and said he didn't find anything. They did a blood test and everything came back fine. The only thing we didn't do was an x-ray because I wanted to try hairball stuff first to treat the issues at home first. The vet also said he needed to loose a few pounds (this was all a year ago). Since then he has lost about a pound and has been on hairball food/treats/cream. He was fine for months.... until fairly recently. Most of the time he will throw up after I give him wet food, so I stopped doing that (also helped with weight loss).

I'm thoroughly puzzled as to what his issue is. I've spoken to a vet tech recently about him and she said as long as he acts fine, eats, poops, drinks, basically everything else normally (which he does) she said he would probably be fine. He never acts lethargic, even right before he throws up, he will play, act normally, eat normally, drink and poop normally... nothing else to show any sign of a blockage, or anything else more serious.

So... I'm asking anyone if they have ever had these issues or might know any other tips to calm a stomach. He is on a good food and has been for years, so I doubt that it is a food allergy or intolerance.

The nest step at the vet would be an x-ray... and I'd rather not do something so extreme if its just a slow digestive system or hairballs.

Any ideas to treat something so irregular when the cat shows no signs of anything else and has been to see a vet that only suggested hairball treatments.... it worked but only for a short time....

I need new ideas to avoid unnecessary vet treatments and stress on a cat that has stress induced U.R.I.

My brother had two sister cats with the same symptoms that became steadily worse over the years. He spent hundreds at the vet with no definitive diagnosis and no change in the cats' symptoms.

The day he switched both girls over to a grain-free canned diet was the last day he saw them throw up... and that was two years ago (or so).

Not saying it'll work for you, but the background and symptoms are so similar, I thought it was worth a mention.

Good luck!

I had my sweet old gal, Odamae. She threw up almost every day. Vet could never find what was wrong. She was of good weight, even a bit over weight.

It was disturbing, but she would vomit, and go about her business. I always told her she was anorexic. She wasn't amused!

I don't know why they do this. It is maddening and worrisome. You still have that x-ray option. At some point it might be a good idea.

Good luck to you and your kitty. Keep us posted if you can.

Do you feed cat treats or any other kinds of food, maybe various wet foods or something?

If you feed treats on occasion, that could be the issue. My cat Memphis was throwing up every other day, sometimes less, and I couldn't figure it out for over a month. Finally, my roommate fed him some treats while I was at night class and he threw up within 10 minutes. I found out it was most likely the dyes or preservatives in the treats that he was allergic to. They were whiskas temptations. I only mention the brand because I have heard about a LOT of cats not being able to handle them, and they're one of the most popular treats.

My Genever has this problem. And we still don't have it figured out. I've tried switching foods, and types of food, with no change. For a while we tried ONLY feeding Natural Balance Duck & Green Pea, both the cans and the dry. But she was still randomly puking.

We did do an x-ray, and all looked normal.

Tried various medicines with no change.

A few months ago we finally tried Prednisolone, in case it was a case of inflammation in the digestive system. Well, that seems to have almost worked! I say almost, because she still pukes, but far less than she used to. It's still at randome times though, sometimes right after eating, sometimes not. Sometimes twice in a day, then not again for a week or longer. I'm at the point now where I may ask the vet if we're going to have to use the Pred. forever (can have bad long term side effects), or if there's something else we should/could try.

I know that's not much help, but the prednisolone is worth asking about, after trying limited ingredient or allergy diet.

Good luck!! Puking is no fun! (and no fun to clean up!)

So update:

Took Cosmo to the vet (a good one) and she had some really good ideas. First of all I'll say that my cat weighed in at 17.4 pounds for a bombay/Dsh that is pretty heavy. So I told her that he pukes at all different times nothing the same as the last one.

She said a few things:

First it could be an acid reflux type condition so she prescribed an anti-acid for him twice a day.

Then she said it could be an irritable bowel disorder, so she also prescribed something to coat his stomach and calm him a bit.

Then she said that because of his weight, (and lack of results on my diet plan) he needed to be on a prescription weight loss diet. And his weight may be a trigger as well to his puking. His esophagus could not be closing correctly (ish) because of the way he carries his weight.

Anyways... so long story short... loose weight first and foremost and treat the symptoms for now, then if it continues, then we can try to find the underlying cause.

Also..... on a side note, if he cannot loose weight on this prescription diet then we check his thyroid. Because I had him on a weight control formula with portion control (which was new for him) and he started to loose weight and gained it all back plus some without any other changes....

So All of this including his puking could be a thyroid issue apparently. So.. recheck in a month. And we go from there. If he looses weight over this month, and can keep it off then his thyroid is fine.

After he is off his meds, I'll be looking into putting him on a limited ingredient diet with Duck and no grains just to see if that helps any. I've recently discovered that he LOVES duck.

Kitty Queen, I was wondering about the thyroid, because one of my babies threw up a lot (just like yours...no obvious reasons) and she had to have a thyroid operation. They only took out one, so she may have to have the other one out too, but for now her numbers are ok. I've also found that some cats are just prone to throwing up easily. Like you mentioned, they eat too fast or drink too much water after they eat. Good luck with it!

Ah, yes, we've done the 1/4 pill of Pepcid A/C too, in fact I still give that on occasion when Genever seems worse than usual. And the coating stuff, Carafate I think it was? Unfortuantely G-cat has to be more complicated than that.

I hope the meds plus diet will help your baby!!

My Westley vomits. He used to do it several times a week.
Vet initially thought it had to do with the low-quality food I was feeding him (Authority). But after running some tests, she found he had a UTI and gave him antibiotics and put him on urinary food (kibble). He stopped vomiting. The food she gave me was no better (ingredient-wise) than what I was feeding him. This prompted me to read more about cat nutrition.
I started paying more attention to what was in his food. He wasn't vomiting while eating this special food, but I also noticed that it was mainly chicken and corn (no fish).
His UTI is gone and he's only thrown up a handful of times since that vet visit.... and every time has been after eating something with fish in it. Now, it could be any number of other additives and ingredients, but a common ingredient that I've identified is fish.
So I'm in the process of testing this theory over a longer period of time. So far, it is working. I gave him some Innova (has herring) and he made a mess. But I can feed anything from junky Friskies to "premium" Wellness and as long as it's fish-free, he has been fine.

My Cat is 7 years old and has always been a nervous cat that vomits all the time . Vet told us she was over weight and didn't really see any issue up until recently she stopped eating and drinking normally . We have started her on Pepcid ac 1/4 tablet twice a day for acid reflux and I day she ate and kept down her food . I would ask your vet if this is something you could start giving her . You may see a change . Good luck
