eating wet food too fast

With four cats in the house, it's like feeding time at the zoo. I feed a combo of wet and dry (Taste of the Wild Dry in the AM; Avoderm, Chicken Soup Wet in the PM). My 6 mnth neutered male has become a vacuum cleaner, sucking up wet food like crazy. He's done with his plate before the others even get through half.

I now put him in a separate room to eat, but he's still eating too fast, and the last couple of days has thrown up his food a few hours after he eats (it's whole chunks of wet food and some undigested kibble). I haven't changed foods or anything and he's playfully active and otherwise healthy. But I'm keeping an eye to be sure.

Is there a way to get him to eat the wet food slower, or should I scale back on feeding him wet? Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Wet food is good for them.
I also have a kitten he is 10 mths old and lots of times eats like a vacuum cleaner and yes he finishes before my other older cat. I do feed in separately in separate rooms. My trick is that I put a few pieces of dry food on top, like 10 - 12 pieces. It does slow him down a bit. He used to throw up sometimes which I thought he was eating to fast. Since I add the few dry pieces he does not throw up except for a hair ball of course.

Smaller portions would be the answer IMO.

How much wet are you feeding in one session? If it tastes great and its like 3oz, he's going to be barf city.

Elevate the dish or get a large ball (like a dog ball) and put it in the dish with the food to slow him down. Keep the water far enough away from the food so he has to at least walk to another place to drink.

I would wonder if there isn't a digestive issue going on, all the morning kibble should be long gone rather than coming back up in the evening and whenever my cat throws up from eating too fast, it's very quickly after original ingestion, not hours later.

Yeah that. Have you tried feeding just wet, no kibble, to see how he does? Also, are you feeding at least three times a day? This is especially important for kittens; in fact, I always feed foster kittens four times a day.

Another suggestion for slowing a fast eater down (if that is, indeed, the issue) is to smear the food flat - really flat - on a medium-sized saucer. Works like a charm.

Best regards. And good luck - I hope you figure out what's causing him to be sick!

What slows our greedy beast down is wet food that's still left in one bigger chunk. If I break it into smaller ones, she'll just swallow the whole thing in no time.

I leave dry kibble down just for the kittens all day. I have their dry food in a separate room inside of a storage container with an opening that my older cats can't get into. One of my older cats needs to eat less, so I've been picking up her food, but leaving some down for the kittens. I know that the food is being eaten because it's gone when I come home from work, and I know that the chubby one can't fit.

I had been feeding the wet around 6 p.m., and the last few times he threw up within 10 minutes; and one time, he threw up 3 hours later, which I agree, has me concerned. He hasn't done that in about a week.

I feed about 2-3 oz in one session, which maybe is too much. I'll try spreading that out over a a few meals, and I'll definitely elevate the dishes too.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I have the vet on speed dial if anything changes or gets worse.

We've finally figured it out. If we add a bit of water to her canned food (which I never cut or break down into pieces, but serve in one larger chunk, unless it's a pouch), she eats forever.

LOL, that's just what I was about to post and suggest!

However I'd take up the kibble and just use it as snacks/treats.

We're pretty much done with the kibble - she gets only a tiny amount a day, split into two snack-meals. One is during my lunch (I buy us some time by letting her play with her Eggthing that spouts kibble when turned the right way) and the other one is before I go to bed.
