Broken Filling

Last week I started the process of having a crown put on my upper right back molar. The major part has been done and the crown is in the process of being made. Tomorrow I go to have it put in.

Today the temporary crown that was put on broke, and now the tooth is ultra sensitive to hot, cold, touch... you name it! It doesn't hurt unless something foreign touches it, which I'm thankful for.

I haven't called the dentist because I go tomorrow afternoon to have the temporary filling removed and the crown put in.

I had a tooth break and about the only thing that helped me was lots of pain killer and clove oil!

I sympathise. But my dentist here is also preparing a crown for me in a bottom molar and she has taken the root out and ground the tooth down as part of the preparation so nothing I do can hurt it (and nothing she does hurts either!) I don't have a temporary crown so I mustn't smile too wide for a week or the gap will show.

I don't like cloves, but I do have Tylenol #3, so that will have to do. I tried oragel but that tastes gross and numbs my whole mouth which is dangerous when eating. I don't want to chew on my tongue or cheek.

I wish it had waited until tomorrow to break!!!

I'll gladly trade places with you Natalie_ca.

My tooth either broke or the filling came out. And another tooth seems to be slowly coming out, but it's not loose. It's an upper tooth and I can tell it's coming out because my teeth don't touch on the opposite side anymore or in the front. That tooth has a problem at the gumline and hurts everyday. Some days are worse than others.

I don't have health insurance or a job. My guess would be that I would have to pay well over $1500 to get work done so I've been dealing with all this pain for about a year. I have to wait 3-4 months to see if I can get the job I want. Even then, I don't know if the health insurance will cover it right away. Because I have sleep apnea and have difficulty breathing with my mouth open wide, the dentist may have to sedate me. Usually when I have to be sedated like that, it has to be done in the hospital to make sure I'm getting enough oxygen and in case I stop breathing. So that's an insurance nightmare.

When I was having bad tooth pain in January, I read that certain kinds of tooth pain will only respond to narcotic pain relievers and not OTC pain relievers. I thought about it and tried a beer, and it worked pretty good. So now I head straight for the alcohol when I have severe tooth pain.

Is it your wisdom tooth that is coming in? When mine came in they hurt like heck. In fact I ended up lancing the gum myself in order to pave the way for the tooth because I couldn't stand the pain of the tooth trying to cut it's way out.

Talk to your dentist and work out a payment plan and arrange to give them post dated cheques. My crown is costing me $600.00 after insurance. I made some payments in advance, but I'm also going to run a tab for the balance for a few months. I discussed that with the dentist before they started the work. Most dentists will do that.

By not having it treated, it will end up making things all the worse and likely causing more damage.

Linda, there are some tolerably-flavored cough drops that have an anesthetic in them -- I've used those for mouth pain a couple of times. I think the brand I had was Cepacol. Hope it all goes well!

I posted (not too long ago) about using vanilla extract for tooth pain. I have since had the tooth extracted, but the vanilla extract worked for me for awhile. I used it 5-6 times before it quit working. Just pour some on a cotton ball and hold it on the painful area for about 30 seconds. It worked for hours the first few times I used it. I hope it works for you!

The pain hasn't been too bad. I notice it when I drink through a straw mostly. If I drink without the straw, it isn't so bad.

I go and get the crown on in an hour, so it will be all better by dinner time.

OMG I had a crown put in last Fall, my first one, the temporary was awful for me, constant pain. I lived on ibuprofen. Immediately when the permanent went in, I was fine. I still can't eat anything really hard on that tooth to this day though. Still a bit sensitive. I don't think I ever want another crown because I have probs with it, just pull the tooth please. I am sure you will be just fine once the permanent goes it. Just make sure they file it down to fit so you are touching it when you bite. I clinch my teeth alot, so I think this is why I am having problems with my crown.

When the dentist looked at the tooth, there was no filling at all! I guess I did more than break it. Not sure where it went! I likely swallowed it :

The crown is on now and it feels great! So much more natural than the filling I had in there for years and years.

One more crown to go. Probably July/August for that one. I'll have finished making payments on this one by then.

I go back on April 7th for a cleaning! I can't wait! I love getting my teeth cleaned!!
