I'm not really sure if this is nutrition or behavior since it's food-related behavior, but we'll try it here.
My 7 month old kitten Tails has a cute foible where he will only finish his wet food meal (2 oz twice a day) when I sit next to him in the kitchen. Usually in the morning I put out their meal then go about finishing getting ready. When I do this, Tails usually comes to meet me by my computer within one or two minutes of eating. I bring him back to the kitchen and he has only finished about half his wet food, which he consistently scarfs down. Then I decided to stay in the kitchen and see what happens that makes him not want to eat any more. Lo and behold, he eats everything, jumps on the counter for my other cat Memphis' food, then runs over to me to get pet. This began a couple months ago, and now I consistently stay in the kitchen with the cats, waiting for them to finish eating before I leave the kitchen.
BTW, when he only eats half of the food right away, Memphis ends up finishing the food when I leave it out for an hour.
I know kittens are more socially needy creatures than adult cats, but has anyone else dealt with a kitten like this and they grew out of it? In a few months I will be starting work full time and he will not have the luxury of me sitting next to him during his morning meal. I would like to figure out a solution before then so I don't have to worry about him only getting half his wet food in the morning. Plus, Memphis will get fat eating the rest of Tails' food all the time.
