Meow Mix's Market Selects? We tried feeding little Simba (or Simba Jr) the expensive "healthier" wet foods and most of it is usually left to dry in his plate.

As a gift from a neighbor; we got a few Market Select containers and Simba polished that off like he never ate before. Fortunately, his dry food is a healthier formulation (Royal Canin Kitten formula) but the Meow Mix wet food makes me feel a bit leery..

Agreed he only gets one container every other day (he seems to prefer his dry food) but still, I'd like to know he's not ingesting too many unhealty nasties!

Tiggy on the other hand loves his food; and I finally figured out the diet he prefers: I alternate Performatrin Ultra Salmon Bisque and Chicken Stew for wet food; and his dry food is Natrual Balance L.I.D. Salmon and Green Pea.

He's still a bit pudgy (as much as Simba has a long, slender body, Tiggy has a more stocky build, I still say he's part Maine Coon)...11 pounds at 11 months old...I guess as long as he doesn't pack on any more pounds he'll be all right...

Hi! I wouldn't feed my cats anything Purina makes! I don't care how much my kitty likes it. I can direct you to article after article to back me up if you're interested, but the short answer is, it's low quality protein w/carb fillers--NOT an ideal diet for a cat. Especially if your kitty is a boy--dry food has been shown to greatly increase the chance he'll get cystitis from dehydration--(crystals in the urine) which can be fatal if they totally block the urethra. Also, dry food packs on the pounds, contributing to obesity. My suggestion? Evo brand, Natural Balance or Nature's Variety wet food. The best, if you can get them to eat it? Raw meat, especially formulated for cats. You can buy it frozen online or at a boutique-type pet store. It's more expensive, but less expensive in the long run than vet visits! My cats have been on a combination of raw and high-quality wet food for over 5 years now. My holisitic vet can't believe how healthy they are!

I don't believe Meow Mix is made by Purina.

Look at the list of ingredients. If the main protein source is by-products, I would stay away from it. Also if the first or second ingredient is corn/wheat/grain, that's not a good sign. IMO Meow Mix dry food is very low quality. However, it looks like the Market Select wet food may be okay with mostly named meat or fish. It has more fish than I like, but that's partly because most of my cats won't eat fishy cat food, or even fishy people food.

Del Monte owns Meow Mix.

The wet food isn't that bad, actually, just fishy so feed with caution (not large amounts). Though you are using a fishy dry food, too.

Is it this one? If so, as already mentioned those ingredients aren't bad, but if you're feeding a fishy dry, I definitely wouldn't do a tuna as a primary protein source wet and would stick to a chicken and rice or similar type food. Or keep this, and switch to a non-fish dry which would probably be better yet since thats where most of the calories are coming from.

TUNA, FISH BROTH, OCEAN FISH, SHRIMP, VEGETABLE OIL, NATURAL FLAVOR, TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, GUAR GUM, VITAMIN E SUPPLEMENT, VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENT, ZINC SULFATE, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, MANGANESE SULFATE, MENADIONE SODIUM BISULFITE COMPLEX (SOURCE OF VITAMIN K ACTIVITY), RIBOFLAVIN SUPPLEMENT, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN D3 SUPPLEMENT, CARRAGEENAN, CALCIUM SULFATE, SODIUM NITRITE (TO PROMOTE COLOR RETENTION), CANTHAXANTHIN COLOR.

Simba's dry food is the Royal Canin Kitten food which is chicken based. It's Tiggy who eats the Salmon and Green Pea dry (they are fed separately).

I didn't know if you'd eventually let both cats have the meow mix.

And really there should be no harm if it was a small part of the food rotation.

I tend to be middle of the road with what my kitties eat.. I won't feed the dry meow mix as I think it is total junk, but they do have the wet once in awhile.
