Disaster for Berlin, Knut the polar bear dies

The beloved Knut, a polar bear hand-raised after his mother rejected him, died suddenly on Saturday as hundreds of shocked zoo visitors looked on.

Knut dies

A video of the incident makes me believe he died of a sudden stroke, but the accusations of poisoning don't seem out of the realm of possibility, either.

Knut's sudden seizure--CAUTION: May be upsetting

I saw that last night. It's so sad!!!

Heartbreaking. I hope he wasn't too aware of what was happening and I hope he wasn't scared

Sad most certainly, but "disaster", well perhaps not considering the real disasters currently happening in the world.

Wow, that video was so sad poor Knut, what an awful way to go I hope they went to get him from the water and tried to save him, he would have drowned before anything else if they hadn't ...

Neither the smiley face, nor the attempt at being cute and clever ("well perhaps not") make this post any less offensive in its disregard to the relative state of that which is tragic. I'm sure all involved in the viewing of Knut's passing would, at the very least, label it a disastrous moment.

Please consider removing it.

I think it's sad too. I watched the video and I hope he passed BEFORE he fell into the water. Otheerwise he probably did drown. :

They're supposed to be doing a postmortem today. It took a while to get him out of the water, but most commentators think he was beyond help before he ever fell in.

Consider...there were 700 people watching, and his presence had been a huge benefit to the zoo. For them, at least, this is a disaster.

Poor Knut

I just watched the video, how sad. It looks exactly what my dog looks like when she has one.

Unfortunately, I doubt that he was dead before he hit the water, but he was more than likely unaware of what was happening as he drowned if he was still having a seizure.

Actually, I was being neither cute nor clever. This is IMO and IMO this is a very sad happening but not a disaster. Now the Tsunami in Japan was a disaster, the earthquake in Haiti was a disaster, New Orleans, etc. A beloved bear in a zoo passing before his time is not what I would call a disaster - devastating to those close to him most certainly.

Duly noted. Henceforth, any form of the word, "disaster(s)", will cease to be used in any individually subjective context, and will instead be routed through you, to determine what's suitably "disastrous" for public consumption.

Well, as I said, this is IMO. At this age in life I tend to be perhaps more selective as to what I consider disastrous, but again, that is just my opinion.

I hadn't seen the video of poor Knut, how horrible for it to happen with so many people watching too. Poor little guy, I hope his passing was fast

And I agree that the event itself isn't a disaster, but for the Berlin Zoo it's a disaster - Knut was a huge drawcard for them, and he was a very special polar bear.

Poor Knut.
It's hard enough watching the video- it must have been just awful for the people there in person. I hope he went very, very quickly and didn't really drown.

I agree its not a disaster its very sad but not a disaster, I understand that he was a bug attraction for Berlin but I don't think there is anything they could of done

The preliminary findings of the necropsy are in:
Knut May Have Died of Brain Disease
Quote:
The sudden death of Knut, the celebrity polar bear, may have been caused by a brain disease, the Berlin Zoo said on Tuesday following an autopsy.

"The first results of the examination found significant changes to the brain, which could be regarded as the reason for the sudden death of the polar bear," the zoo said in a statement. "The pathologists didn't find any changes in other organs."

I can understand a little of the upset for the Germans. I grew up in Denver, and the Denver Zoo (which was free, in those days) had polar bear named Velox. She was blind and getting old, but she was much beloved by the people of Denver, espcially the children. She was buried there at the zoo when she died, and there is a headstone there for her to this day.
