Hi Guys,
it's been a long time since i've visited but i have a home remedy for persistent eye trouble.

My cat bobbie has had a weepy eye problem for years and every now and then we take her into the vet and he checks for scratches, ulcers etc. and there are none. So he gives us drops that clear it up for a while, then it comes back. His diagnosis, and the diagnosis of at least one other vet is that sometimes cats with a bit of persian in them get these blocked tear ducts...

Anyway, the other day, after reading that organic coconut oil is not toxic to cats i thought i would just try to see if that might help with the problem rather than the eye drops.... so, i got a q tip and dipped it in the bottle of coconut oil and then just gently rubbed it over the corner of the eye near the nose where the tear duct is.

she usually squirms around but didn't i am presuming because there was no stinging sensation... anyway, her the weepeyness cleared up and even though it does come back from time to time, the coconut oil clears it right back up again.

just thought i would share that with you incase any of you have the same troubles.

As the slave of a one-eye'd extreme flat-faced Himmy (arrrrgh) lol, I have had to deal with the weapy eye.

What I do every day (and this has stopped it other than he has little grungies in the morning I wipe out gently), then use Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution (which is cheaper on line, like many cat products and medicines).

To apply to each eye (or one if that's the only one), is hold your cat in cuddly-position, using your left thumb, pull down eyelid and with right hand, squirt in the Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution - this will get any debris, dust - anything that may be in the eye.

After 5 minutes (with multiple eye medicines, you apply 5 minutes apart, at least), I apply a medicine called "Vetericyn". Where I live, it's $40.00/16 fluid oz, but worth it.

Chief Red Cloud (Himmy) had eye infection as well, above his eye, and it has completely gotten rid of that; it also got rid of my cat, Jules-Verne's neck and chest scabie situation from being allergic to "Taste of the Wild" food I was trying to slowly mix in since Innova has been taken over by Proctor and Gamble. (Back on Innova for now).

I know it's not made from flowers and herbs, but it does say it won't harm the environment and is biodegradable.

I'm adding this just in case a natural remedy doesn't come along and you need something quick.

Warmly,

Julie O'

no no... it's not an essential oil. some of those are harmful to cats. (the ones with phenols) coconut oil is just a food, so i think you could find it online via amazon or at a grocers that stocks some asian produce . I am in malaysia, so it's pretty common, but the organic stuff is less common, i buy that from the organic store. hope it works out for you.... love your name "naps with cats" cute

I got it! So the canned Coconut Water - would that help? We have a lot of world markets here. Geez, when I lived in L.A., I lived very close to the Asian side of town and had Asian next door neighbors all the time - one took me to one of those cool Chinese Pharmacies - I was in awe and felt wonderment (but shouldn't have since it's been around for thousands of years)... but still, never having been to one before - just soooooo different from our own chemical-pharmacies! Think I'd definitely prefer the natural.

I'll try our World Market once I can get back up to this other town.

(When I was in Brasil, coconuts abounded! I'm guessing like in Malaysia. Wish I could travel again sooooooooo much. Only been to a few places in Europe and Brasil (took out my entire 401K, took the penalty and took my dream vacation before "it was too late" which actually, it would have been. What memories!

So would 100% coconut milk-juice do the trick? We have coconuts here, but none as sweet as I had while in Brasil.

Thanks so much for your help,

Warmly,

Julie O'

nooooo sorry if i was not clear - you need the OIL not the water... the oil even though it is an oil, is not an essential oil, it is just a cooking oil or used as a salad garnish... or for your hair or skin.

try this
http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Extra-.../dp/B00014IVPQ

be weary though, my bobbie is not totally flat nosed so it may have limitations on pure persians....

Thank you so much for the link. One article says not to put directly in the eye, and I'm afraid from putting it so close to the tear duct it will get into the eye, but if it works, I'll try it. Wow, it even helps diabetes? (I'm pre-diabetic).

Thanks so much! I'll give it a try!

Just found this thread.  My newest rescue Dominicus has blocked tear ducts.  I always prefer natural/homeopathic treatments.  I am currently transitioning my dog & all my cats to a raw food diet.  Can't tell you all the positive info there is for coconut oil.  Great to use in animal-dog,cat, horse & human diets. Great article in the Whole Dog Journal.

Coconut oil, especially for animals-so as not to cause digestive issues, is organic & very important extra virgin. The best place to buy is Costco.  The brand is Nutiva $22.50 for 78 fl oz., which is a great buy!  Can also be used topically for our skin care & animal skin care including, but not limited too fungal skin infections, even toe nail infections. Also anti wrinkle & minor abrasions.  This is a very stable oil that is great to cook w/for things that need to be cooked @ a high temperature.  Or even just great tasting pancakes!  I am going thru this huge container of coconut oil faster than I would have dreamed... with 1 dog, 13 rescue cats & my daily smoothie.  Store @ room temp.  Even at room temp it will be solid below 75 degrees!

Botttom line...I wasn't terribly surprised to see that this was a recommended treatment!

HAHA! Yes! I actually was cleaning my Siamese's ears out (which weren't as dirty as I thought, only freckled!) with coconut oil yesterday and decided to try a little around her goopy eyes.....and VOILA! They look so much better it's ridiculous! Her eyes tear up......A LOT. For no apparent reason, and of course then they dry up & get all goopy. She must be allergic to something, but as yet I have no idea what.

Anyway, thanks for being another person who is a fan of coconut oil! Good for what ails ya'!

Where do you think?
Interesting I'll have to pick some up for Indy. Her one eye is always wattery I don't think she's Persian at all but she is tiny overall and her snout is quite small.

I am new on this site and have a question to ask please but am unsure of how to go about asking so I'm trying this. Sorry. My question is that I have been over ran by 3 unexpected litters. All are healthy. But my 1 little orange guy is 3 months old and has had 1 weepy eye since he was 2 days old. Tried the coconut oil and think it would work but all the other kittens like the taste of it and clean little guy up so it doesn't stay on him for long. How long is effective??
