anyone else have a cat who "plays" like this?

Holland has never been much of a playing kitty, even when I got her at 5 months old. When I discovered her dental problems and how much pain it caused her, getting her teeth pulled made a HUGE difference, and she will now play with her toys (although she's still not much for wand toys). Furry mice are her favorite, she loves to bat them around and bunny kick them, etc.

Anyway, lately she has taken to a new game... she gets her exercise by RUNNING. Everywhere. I taught her to play fetch, and she used to bring her mousie back to me, but now I throw it, she runs to it, and then looks at me. I go to pick up the mouse and as I get near she runs away again. Then she does her "flat kitty" ready pose on the floor to wait for me to throw it again, she runs to it again, and we repeat the process. When she's in a playful mood these days, when I get near her, she just runs away and then looks at me like she wants me to "chase" her again.

I can't complain, because she's getting her exercise. After a few minutes she is visibly breathing hard. Just wondering if anyone has ever seen this behavior? And if there are any suggestions of other games that might be good to play with a "runner"?

It's great to hear of a very playful kitty!!! She must feet great! My cats do variations of your game. Sometimes they just run for the fun of it with no toy in sight!

Actually, like right now!!

Tumbles!! He loves to run, run, run, and then jump off the walls in the hallway! He reminds me of a little colt when he bounces off the walls. It's really cute, in an annoying way. I will toss a toy down the hall and he'll run and pick it up then make a lap around the house and lose the toy somewhere along the way.

Shelly and I play "chase." We do it without the toy. If he's sitting look at me all big-eyed, I just "stomp" toward him and tell him I'm going to get him... and he takes off like a shot! I go after him, and when I get near, I "stomp" at him again - and we just keep going round like this till he flies up the cat tree. Then he wants to play "peek-a-boo" hiding behind the "trunk" of the tree, guess which side I'm going to pop my head out at him... or he'll surprise me and pop his head out at me.

I don't think there's a toy to replace the running game.

Yep, both Genever and Dorothy run laps. Sometimes there are toys involved, sometimes they're chasing each other, and sometimes just one of them will be running around on their own. One game Genever and I play is kind of chasing game with a wand toy, the way our house is, there's a wall and closet kind of in the middle between the living room area and the hallway area by the bedrooms. So we can run in circles around the closet, and peek around the wall, run the other way, hide and wiggle the wand toy around the wall, etc. Fun stuff!

That's exactly what I do. I always love when I tell her I'm gonna get her and she throws me for a loop and just sits there when I get to her, giving me a look like "What the heck are you doing, mom?"

Lynxx would play fetch and always bring the ball back. We'd also play chase, he'd chase me. I'd turn around and chase him. Midnight I chase but he won't chase me. Luna likes when we throw straws for her, and she brings them back.
