G'day everyone

Obviously I'm a new kid on the block so I'm not yet familiar with the way things are done here - I must apologise in advance for any ignorance.
On previous forums I have frequented, the polite thing to do was to say hallo first and foremost. So yep, hi there everyone!

I write to you from South East Australia from the island state, Tasmania. I grew up in rural Tasmania and recently moved to the city for my education.
I'm an animal lover and in my second year of a zoology major (I'm still considering doing veterinary science after I graduate this degree).

I grew up with a cat my mum 'rescued' as a kitten when I was a young child. Her name is Miffy (yes, after the bunny from the kid's tv show :p) and at 18 she is getting on in her years. However, at her last vet appointment the vet was very impressed with her health - so hopefully she has a little while yet!

More recently my partner and our two housemates decided we would like to adopt a cat or some kittens. After a few weeks of some serious decision making and preparation we began visiting our local cat rescue centre. We initially wanted to adopt an older cat (or two) but unfortunately there were few cats to choose from and they were not what we were looking for. We tried for a few weeks but eventually decided that kittens would probably be the most suitable, given that we wanted friendly, well socialized cats.

This brings me to where I am now, writing to you about the two little boys we adopted. They are now 9 weeks old, both are moggies - one is tabby and white and the other ginger and white. They are very adorable, I shall post pictures later if/when I am able!

Sorry about the essay everyone, thanks for bearing with me!
Cheers,
Lauren
p.s. please don't hesitate to tell me if I am doing anything wrong - I really appreciate being given advice.

Hi Lauren, and WELCOME!!!

Having been a volunteer for a loooong time at a kill shelter, I can tell you that many volunteers will foster the older cats so they do not get euthanized if you happen to be looking to adopt from a kill shelter. You can check by calling the shelter and asking for the "volunteer line" and leave a message. The volunteers don't usually answer right away because they're taking care of the animals, but someone always takes the messages and then sometimes someone else will return the calls.

Adopting elderly cats is a wonderful, beautiful thing to do, and the people who surrender their elderly cats - it breaks my heart to the maximum!

If you end up adopting kitties, I'd suggest adopting at least 2 - they will do better.

I'd first try, since you'd prefer an older cat, calling the volunteer line. During kitten season, the older cats "go . . ." right after the sick and the feral cats. It's so not a pretty site.

Wishing you luck in your search! :-D

Warmly,

Julie O'

p.s. No Kill shelters generally get their cats from the Kill shelters (which is why they're called rescue shelters as well) so there is another option. Call shelters near you to find out about adopting an older cat. Here where I live there are many, but there are sooooooo many kitties, and they "sell" so much better to help keep the place running (understandable in a way), they usually all have mostly kitten pictures up and take down the pictures of the elderly.

Thanks everyone for your kind welcome

Julie-O, we decided against adopting adult cats after trying for a number of weeks at both the RSPCA and our local cat shelter. We just couldn't find an adult suited to our lifestyle. In the future we will always look to getting an adult - I hate the idea of them being stuck there
For now though we have our hands full with 2 kittens (see op) - Pierre and Finley.

Kind regards - Lauren

Tee hee, thanks guys
they really are adorable, but you are quite right about the work! But they seem to be quick learners. Already toilet trained when we got them.
I'm not sure how many of you have seen my post in the health section but we have had some sickness - but thank goodness they are both on the mend!

I quite like them this little but it will be nice to be able to walk them in our garden etc. We have halters but we don't want to walk them outside til they are bigger.
