I'm in TX too (born and raised
) but rarely hear it called coke unless it's an actual Coke (I call it a soda) and have never heard a shopping basket/cart called a buggy. What part of TX are you in? I'm in south TX.

Here, they call it soda-pop - or ask you if you want a "coke" - no matter what kind of soft drink it is that you prefer. You have to specify what kind of "coke" it is that you want when someone asks you (i.e. Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Mt. Dew, etc.).

It's funny how different things are depending upon where you live. Here everyone calls a shopping basket/cart a "buggy". I had to start calling them buggies too after I moved here and started working at Wal-Mart because no one knew what I was referring to if I asked for their cart so I could load it up. One time there was a lady who thought I was asking for her (credit) card: she told me I didn't need her card because she was paying with a check.

No one here knows what a "bubbler" is, either. Anyone care to take a wild guess? (I'll bet you Northerners know!

Dr Pepper or Sweet Iced Tea is my choice of drinks. Not a fan of Coke or Pepsi or any cola type drinks.

I voted for Pepsi but I prefer Diet Pepsi or Pepsi Max. Lately, we have been getting Stars & Stripes Diet Cola at the 99 cent only store. It tastes better than Shasta Diet Cola and we can get a 3 liter bottle for $1.

I have always called it either soda, pop or coke. When I visited
Texas a few years ago, my friend told me they do not call 7-11 convenience stores. They call them Ice Houses! She would say "I am going down to the Ice House for a soda pop!"

I'm in southeast Texas. Maybe it's just in this area where they refer to things differently?

I voted other. I TRY to stay away from dark pop. I will however drink ginger ale sometimes. I used to be a pepsi addict but over time it will wreak havoc on the guts.
I don't drink tea or coffee either. Yuck!

Water is my first choice, then OJ or milk (chocolate too).

I was about to ask why you stay away from dark soft drinks only, but I took at look at your location and see you are in Canada, which answered my question....I think.

Health Canada regulations only allow caffeine in 'dark-colored' varieties of soft drinks such as cola and root beer. Any clear soft drink cannot contain caffeine and be marketed as a "soft drink."

The regulations in the USA are different: They are allowed to put caffeine into clear soft drinks such as Mountain Dew etc.

EDIT: I see that in March 2010 Canada changed their regulations. Companies can now add Caffeine to cola and non-cola-type beverages in general.

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/securit...bg-faq-eng.php

However, to my knowledge, drinks like Ginger Ale, Mountain Dew and 7-Up have remained caffeine free.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
I voted other.
I basically stopped drinking carbonated drinks. If I'm going to have one, I have a "China Cola." It's a "natural" cola with chinese herbs, and not nearly as fizzy as traditional carbonated beverages. Very soothing on the tummy! http://www.reedsinc.com/china-cola/ I'll also have a Reed's Ginger Brew occassionally.

I grew up in San Antonio and have lived in Texas my entire life. I grew up saying Coke for every kind of soda. Now I just say, "What kind of drink would you like?" I also have called the shopping cart a buggy. I use them interchangeably.

As for the survey, of the choices listed, I prefer Coke. I drink water most of the time as caffeinated drinks make me unable to sleep at night.

I grew up in and still live in SA too. I never heard either of those terms used (esp. the buggy one) here.

I will drink pretty much anything other than 7-up or sprite. I prefer pepsi over coke, but don't care either way. I usually drink water throughout the day, a pop with my lunch and juice for dinner. If I am working in the morning, I will grab a coffee before work.

Coca Cola was probably awesome back when it was made with real sugar, and they used fresh coca in the product (basically a very weak cocaine that probably gave a mild buzz along w/ the caffeine).

With high fructose corn syrup and denatured coca... bah humbug!!!

I am fond of the cane sugar Mountain Dew Throwback though, which I believe is part of Pepsi.

I always refer to Coke as the Elixer of the Gods! If a restaurant has Pepsi instead of coke I tend to get water or iced tea

Well, they definitely have their own language in this area. Or maybe it just seems that way to me cuz I'm not from here.

People here sometimes get a kick out of some of the phrases or words that I use, too. For example, I'll use the word "once" at the end of a sentence - such as, "Could you please come here once?". I have no idea why: just something I picked up growing up, and it's stuck ever since. Cracks my roommate up every time.
So I guess fair is fair.

I put other because I enjoy pepsi and coke equally (am I really the only person with no preference?), just depends on what kind of mood I'm in. Though really, cola in general is near the bottom of my preferences. Orange pop is the first choice for carbonated beverages, but I prefer water/gatorade to carbonated drinks, or tea if I need caffeine. Caffeine affects me a lot though, so I can't drink it within 7 hours of going to bed, limiting how often I drink it.

For referece, it's really common for people in the Chicago area to call all different pops Coke as well. That's followed in popularity by pop since we're in the midwest, and we'll look at you really funny if you start mentioning soda
