Lack of skilled workers

Factories having trouble finding workers

Quote:
You might think that it would be easier for manufacturers to find new employees. After all, the number of workers employed in factories is still more than 2 million lower than pre-recession levels due to layoffs or plant closings.
But experts in manufacturing staffing say that many of the factory workers who find themselves without a job simply don't have the specialized skills now in short supply.
Manpower, the global temporary staffing firm, lists skilled trades as the most difficult position for employers to fill, both in the United States and across 36 countries surveyed.
Jonas Prising, Manpower's president of the Americas, said a big part of the problem is the reluctance of students and other young job seekers to even consider pursuing trades because of worries that the manufacturing sector is doomed.

I ran into a local college councilor the other day at work and he told me that the college is flooded by laid-off people who used to be in the trades that are returning to school for another profession. When I told him that I used to be in IT, he added that they are discouraging people to pursue that field because it is so heavily offshored. I can see why people are nervous about manufacturing jobs for the same reason.

People want a sense of security, and until they see their government making a concerted effort in stabilizing the job market in the U.S., there will always be situations like this. I know I won't go back into IT, even though the income potential is there.

The trades used to be the lifeblood of our country. Many of which were passed down. Some of the craft type trades will be a dying profession, which is a shame. Trades like tailors, seamstress, furniture makers, cabinetmakers, handcrafted trades, etc. For all the "stimulus" money going around, too bad the government doesn't have a plan to preserve some of the traditions of our heritage.
