Utah Legislature Passes Bill to Teach US is a Republic

Reading the comments at the end of the article it sounds politically motivated, but does the history of what our country is have to come to this?

The United States IS a constitutional republic. If an American doesn't know that they shouldn't have passed a single American history or government class in grade school and high school. The US isn't a democracy even though we practice different forms of democracy throughout the country at the various local, state, and national levels- direct, popular, and elite (which especially runs amok at the federal level).

The bill passed after weeks of debate over the differences between democracies and republics and whether socialism is a form of government or a philosophy
Republicanism (not the same as the party), democracy and socialism are all theories and exist in different forms.

Is it me or are politicians just stupid?

It sounds like somebody is just trying to get his name in the news. Just where are kids supposedly being "indoctrinated into socialism"?

how ridiculous!! Logically, there is an underlying assumption to this bill that currently, the fact that the US is a republic isn't taught in schools, this is what ticks me off the most!!!
And while yes it's obviously politically motivated, politicians having senseless debates about the difference between a democracy and a republic, and wasting time on the floor while trying to increase their popularity by appealing to their constituents is a bit much IMO!!
And the fact that they assume their constituents are ignorant enough to believe that by passing this bill, positive things are done to make society better is just offensive

Well, its true the United States is not even a representative democracy, and we are a republic. This is such a non-issue, but I can confirm that we were not properly educated on this at my public school, and considering there are still students particularly in the South that graduate barely able to read and write, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority didn't know the difference... but again, they can barely read or write, so this is hardly a priority.

Furthermore, that tax payers are funding "weeks of debate" on this to boot... seriously? Sounds like we have some government representatives that aren't needed and can be let go to help pay off our debts.

It is pretty well accepted that our public school system has a very liberal slant, and since teachers are given quite a bit of flexibility, many do use this to instill their ideals in their students. Worst in my case was actually 10th grade English class, as my teacher was VERY political.

Having attended schools overseas, its also interesting to see the different interpretations and emphasis placed by different countries on historical events.

Huh? That's a new one to me. Is this about not wanting to teach creationism? Who exactly considers it well accepted?

Yeah, why is part of the reason why I posted the article.

I'll be forty this year. If I remember correctly from my days in grade school and high school the only thing that was taught about history and government were the major events. You would get a date, names, and places for historic moments but very little detail as to why or how something happened. I don't if it is still that way today at those levels of education.

I feel that history is a very important subject. How can you know where are going if you don't know where you have been? I'm a history major though, which probably makes me a bit biased on the subject.

Sadly, a lot of people do believe it. Which is why politicians keep on doing it instead of working on solutions to issues that would truly benefit this country and not just their careers.
