So I've been in my job as an event organiser for a conference centre for 2 and a half years, I know it inside out, I'm really comfortable here, my boyfriend works here too, which I love, and I have friends here. I have a couple of gripes, as everyone does with their job. Mostly I like it, but I'm not progressing at all, i'm not using my full potential and there is no way of progressing, I've asked.
I've had debilitating pain in my left hip for 17 years, and I had a hip replacement in December, so, while I'm still recovering a little bit, I'm back at work now, I'm fine and my hip is better than ever.
While i was off work recovering from surgery I was headhunted by a hotel I've been trying to work at for years. It's much bigger than the conference centre that I'm at. I've been recruited to carry out a slightly more senior role, so this is progression, and the money is significantly better. But I'm scared!!!!! What do I do? Stay where I'm comfortable or push on forward with my career???

Sounds like you've been handed your next big adventure! I say go for it- life is all about change, and this sounds like a change for the better! You don't want to be stuck with what-ifs in the future.

I agree. Go for it! While you seem to thoroughly enjoy your current job, it sounds like it is very stagnant. No room for growth or opportunity. The new job offers a chance to grow professionally and handle new challenges. If you stay where you are, you will always wonder what you could have accomplished at the new job. If they didn't think you could do the job, they would not have recruited you. Be confident and forge ahead. Keep us posted.

It seems like you are being offered a wonderful opportunity. Just look at your life now....if you stay where you are what positive changes will occur over the next 5 years. If you take it think of the experiences and changes that will greet you every day.

Where do you want to be 5 years from now?

Wow, thanks everyone!

Where do I want to be in 5 years? Well, to be honest, I will be 35 then and I hope to have children in around 2 - 3 years.

Workwise - I haven't thought about it! I really should think about what I want!

I agree with everyone else... go for it!

But, I would reccomend staying on the BEST of terms with your current employer so if it doesn't work out at the hotel, you can always try to go back to your old job.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Personally I would stay where I get to work with my favorite people. That is just me. I would love having a job where my significant other and friends were there daily. It would be awesome and extra money wouldn't deter me from that good work environment.

Since you plan on having children I would check the policy with both companies regarding maternity leave, job security and as needed family leave after your maternity.

Exactly!

Really, it depends upon what you want from your job in life. I always valued my independence over everything else. Do you value being challenged more than working with friends? However, as you want to have kids, I think policies regarding that should weigh in rather heavily on your decision.

Maternity leave - in my current job it seems to be pretty good, full pay for 18 weeks, then it moves on to statutory.

I odn't know the maternity leave policy at the new place, I would expect it to be good as they are a large company?

Both companies are very big companies.

It's a very exciting challenge, I just get nervous about leaving a job which I'm so comfortable (allbeit bored!) with!
