In fact, 6 to 8 million animals enter shelters every year, and only 3-4 million of them are adopted. The rest are murdered to make room for the next 3-4 million that will then be murdered. The problem, of course, is that cats reproduce at a rate far greater than there are homes for them. Of course, people who allow their non-pure bred cats to breed contribute to the problem, even though their cats may not be roaming.
