Baytril injection, safe?

Spike had a dental, slow coming out of anesthesia, and a possible ear infection from the vets cleaning his ears while under.

He is doing better now, still off balance, but I am wondering about the vets treatment.

She told me they gave him an injection of Baytril. I looked it up for side effects, and one thing I find is "INJECTION NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CATS".

He seems a little sleepy, but not so much for a cat, and I think the ear issue is resolving, his balance is better than what it was, BUT, is it still not recommended? I am hoping my info is outdated.

I hate to think this vet is totally incompetent.
Anyone have updated drug knowledge on Baytril?

This does sound weird. I found this: http://www.discountpetmedicines.com/...antibiotic.htm

Baytril has ear drops. The injection is for dogs only.

Apparently baytril in doses more than 5mg per kg per day can cause blindness: http://www.showcatsonline.com/x/baytril_warning.shtml

When I asked you yesterday if you'd started looking for a feline specialist, I did a quick search in Philly. I found one called The Cat Dr. that seemed to have a lot of really great reviews. I don't know where in Philly you are, but here's a link: http://www.thecatdr.com/

Thanks, we have a lot of good vets in the area. I tried a new one this time, she seems very good, and has very good reviews, but I thinking not so much. I think I will be returning to one of the other vets I have used in the past.

I certainly hope it is safe for cats!

Teppo is on his last day of Baytril injection. He's a cat although he kind of is dog-size cat. He was given it after dental when he developed a terrible cold and goopy eye. He could not tolerate the Baytril liquid that was given first (came up with bloody vomit).

When I was given the bottle (what an expensive little thing that was!) I immediately asked abut the dog thing too. I did not get extensive explanation but was told it is going to be ok for the 10 day course. I am trying not to be too paranoid because this vet is Feline-only practice and they seem to have been very much on the ball about any other med (Metacam etc) that other vets seem to have no clue.

What it comes to Teppo he has done very well on the injections, except for poor appetite which is to be expected with any antibiotic and cold. On fourth night he had a little itchy episode on the injection site but otherwise no problems and his cold is now gone and eye clear. Hope you find more info and please do post your findings. Good luck - we have had terrible time with our two dentals in the last month!
