Hobbes did not seem very interested in his morning meal today. He came to the kitchen but not trying to climb up my legs to reach his bowl as he usually does but then did follow eagerly to the room where we feed the 2 kitties. He had about 0.5 oz of the 2.25 oz that I tend to give each one and then tried "covering" his food. He is a voracious eater. He then we upstairs where DH was getting ready to go to work, came down and went to his litter box and had diarrhea. Sorry TMI but it was rather liquid-y - not watery. He got out of his litter box- did not cover his poop. Came out and vomitted out what he had eaten. Calvin then went in and covered Hobbes's poop and he went - he was ok. Now with Hobbes's history of being positive for coccidia, I tend to worry but this can also be a run of the mill indigestion. We was very gassy yesterday. He has not seemed interested in food since and at this point I do not know what to feed him and how to feed him away from Calvin. Honestly, I have a feeling that he's been overeating (I am in constant fear that I am overfeeding them) and maybe his tummy needs a bit of break. Is it ok if I not let him eat this morning and then make some chicken and rice in the afternoon for them?
Would appreciate any advice.
I will also call the vet's office once they open.

From what I understand, what you're planning is exactly the right protocol. I would offer him a little bit of food during the morning, but don't push him to eat it. If you can make a little chicken for breakfast, I would - or do you have some chicken or lamb baby food (no onion or garlic) - to offer. And, definitely call the vet - you don't want any cat to go too long without food, and I know I'd feel better having the vet's advice as to when to panic.

The vet knows about the food issue, right? I wonder if having a can of Hills A/D or Z/D around wouldn't hurt.

It's so hard when you have food issues - my Dante had some issues, but not as seriously as Hobbes. We seemed to turn a corner when I realized fishy food is not good for his tummy and a course of tylan powder (a mild antibiotic often used for tummy issues) seemed to help a lot.

Thanks darlili...I have chicken in the freezer, I can just cook some in the morning and see. It's actually Calvin with the food issues, Hobbes seemed Ok with all food in general. But Hobbes has hairball problems and he just had a bout of hairball cough with nothing coming out and I was wondering if that could be a possibility. I will call the vet's office and see what they say. The one time Calvin vomitted this foamy thing and was unwell, he was lethargic, not interested in anything etc. Hobbes is otherwise normal as he always is.

The other thing is, and I know this will sound gross, but Hobbes usually has HORRIBLE smelling poop - complete gag inducing. But his poop was not that smelly today when he had diarrhea - so I am thinking that there is some imbalance today.

I do have some a/d at home but none of the boys seem to like it much. Maybe try chicken and in the evening if they are keen then a/d? I have a feeling that Hobbes will not eat right now since when he is hungry he usually goes to his dry food bowl and starts licking/ scratching it. So I will wait a bit and give him some chicken and rice perhaps?
Also should I ask DH to get some canned pumpkin when he's on his way back from work?

Hi Hun!! Sorry Hobbes is feeling under the weather. This is what I did when Presley had the exact same thing two weeks ago. I gave his tummy a rest for the morning. Went to vet and picked up Hill's ID ( AD is a very rich, appetite stimulant food, I wouldn't go that route). ID is a very bland, easy to digest canned food and the cat's seem to like it. So I gave him ID for the evening meal, with an added Probiotic. I did this for one day, and started adding in his other food again slowly. This was when I told you about cutting down on my cat's calories as I was feeding him way to much.

The vet should be open this morning, so I would call and tell them what happenned and see if they recommend the ID or something else. The chicken/rice is just fine too. Presley got over it in one day, but it did take about twenty four hours for things to calm down. He too had very smelly and liquid shooting diarrhea, which he didn't cover either

Yup. I third the agreement with your suggestion to give his tummy a break (he's indicating that's what he wants anyway
), and then try something bland - and see how it goes from there.

for the little guy!

Thanks - I always get the ID and the AD mixed up - when Dharma was on Clavomox and wasn't eating, they gave me a can of AD to 'get her started' - worked well, but she initially ate too much too fast and tossed her cookies. After that, it worked well until the meds were done and she got her old appetite back.

And, so sorry I got the kittens mixed up. For what it's worth, Dharma sometimes doesn't eat well when she's trying to get rid of a hairball. I've been giving her one Pet Naturals of Vermont chew a day (I get them from Petco - the bag say more, but that gives her soft poo) and she's been ok for about 6 months now. She simply won't eat any of the other hairball remedies - and it's amazing how well she'll shake off the other stuff from her paw.

I hope Hobbes is feeling better now, though.

Sorry little Hobbes isn't feeling well. Sounds like what we used to go through with Callie when she was having hairball problems. Have you added pumpkin to his diet to help the hairballs pass?

Hi everyone,

Sorry I was not able to log on yesterday to post a response and today was crazy busy. So Hobbes is doing better - he did want food in the afternoon yesterday and ate in the evening and they both got some chicken and rice. Cannot say that it is their favorite food

DH and I are nearly at the point where we feel that giving them dry food is not worth the convenience - not just for this particular incident but in general. I will be going out of town in a couple of weeks (which I had postponed) and am thinking of getting a couple of Slimcat balls and filling them with dry for the 12 or so hours they will be home alone.
But ok - explain this to me. Why are all canned pumpkins sold out?????? Crazy. DH and I went to 3 stores and then gave up. We asked at the large grocery chain here and they said that it was a "hot" item. So my kitties are on fiber till I go again tomorrow.
Hope all of you and your kitties had a good weekend!

Glad to hear he's feeling fine.

I think your idea of putting the kibble in the Slimcat balls is a great idea!

As to the pumpkin.... not a single idea why it's sold out.

Isn't that crazy? March in Ohio and everyone wants pumpkin? Why don't I ever need to buy it? I must not have the "right" recipes and my pantry is sorely deficient

Maybe because it's out of season they have very little in stock, and cat moms have had a run on canned pumpkin because everyone's kitties are shedding!

Canned pumpkin for shedding kitties
I guess that is a great home remedy. Glad Hobbes is doing better today. I have a great supplement that I always have on hand!! It is made by Honest Kitchen and called Perfect Form. It has pumpkin, fennel and slipery elm. You should look into it for Hobbes. Great stuff
. And, I think the slimcat for the dry kibble is a great idea too

There was a pumpkin shortage season before last. Much of the pumpkin crop was destroyed by bugs and such. When last year's crop came in and was available in the stores, people stocked up. (We bought 3 cases of it at Aldi!) Pumpkin (not pie filling) is loaded with fiber and good for helping kitties & humans stay regular. Slippery Elm bark is also good to use.

ThAt just maybe the case since canned pumpkin is just flying off the counters at the grocery stores. So we got some from Whole Foods. How much canned pumpkin should I feed them?

Btw, Hobbes's tummy issues have resolved and they've just had only wet food. Am waiting for the slim cats to arrive to give them dry again.

Hey there
. About one tablespoon for 15 pounds is the norm. So for eight pounds, I would start with one teaspoon and see how it goes. I have found a wonderful supplement I use for Pipsqueak ALOT for his tummy issues. It is by Honest Kitchen and called Perfect Form. You can usually get it at a natural pet food store or just on-line. It has pumpkin, fennel and slippery elm. works great for my cats.

Ok will try a teaspoon. I looked for perfect form because you had told me earlier but couldnt find in our store. Will order online then. Do you give it to pipsqueak for tummy troubles or hairball?

For tummy and diarrhea problems. Since he has been on the supplement and I went to grain-free, he has not had diarrhea in over a year
. I give him 1/8 tsp. of Perfect Form everyday

Canned pumpkin was a GREAT HIT! They loved it and we had a pumpkin war with them going nuts wanting more. I gave them 1 teaspoon each. Should I give it to them everyday? Or should I give it to them periodically and then a couple of times a week some vaseline? Calvin is medium haired and Hobbes is short and spring is around the corner. Both have "hairball cough" and only Hobbes is the one who vomits.
