I am sooo worried.

I took Spike for a routine dental and blood work yesterday. this morning he was still falling over from the anesthesia, took him back to vet all vitals are fine, and he should have processed the anesthesia. Brought him back home, and he is still wobbly. The vet doesn't know why, except he is not processing the anesthesia, he is not getting rid of it. he is still wobbly, I am so mad that I had a dental done, he didn't have that much tartar. It is now over 24 hours since he had it, he is not getting any better. the vet says to call tomorrow, I am soo worried. they gave him fluids, and syringed some food. I just tried to syringe, but he resisted, didn't get much in him. will do it again later, with a better grip on him.

Has anyone had this experience?

My Jack had surgery to remove a tumor and it took the better part of 48 hours for him to be able to walk without falling over. I was so mad that the vet released him to us in that condition. I slept on the floor with him for 2 days and offered him food wherever he was every couple of hours. He ate a little.

After those days, though, he bounced back.

Aren't most cats really groggy directly after surgery? I'm not sure how the vet would know that the grogginess would last so much longer in Jack than other cats. Or was his grogginess especially acute?

They are, but this was MUCH worse than usual (he had fibrosarcoma and had a couple of surgeries from that plus several dentals) and lasted twice as long as it usually does. To me it seemed like he was overdosed. He was scary wobbly (like 1 step, face plant, another step, face plant) and completely out of it for two days. I expect a little loopy/wobbly but not like that time.

The vet said this is unusual, he should have been back to normal the same day. He had this done thursday around 1 pm, he should have been back to normal that night. It is now over 24 hours and he is still wobbly. Now she says to make sure that if he ever has any anesthesia again to make sure they know he had this reaction, and to wait until things are absolutely necessary, although she encouraged me to get his teeth cleaned, although the technician said "they weren't that bad". I should have not had this done. Today she said she expected him to be 100% by now, and he is not, I can't get food into him, he fights me. He is supposed to be 100% by tomorrow,I am to call them, they open at noon. I am so worried. I hope he snaps out of it.

Aww! Poor baby. When I used to do dental cleanings I didn't hear of this happening too much. Keep a close eye on him as I am sure you are. I hope he feels back to normal soon.

I did not ask them to do that, and they did not tell me they were going to, but when I told them he seemed to be twictch in and scratiching the left ear, they told me they always clean them when they are under. I guess that is nice, but I didn't ask them to do that, I don't know what that entailed. I am soo worried, what if he dies?

If he's still like this tomorrow, be at the vet's first thing. I would think some fluids to flush it out would be in order.

They did give him subq today, and they got a little food in him. I couldn't get any food in him earlier. I will try again in a few hours. He is sleeping now. They said to let them know, but I am thinking there is nothing else they can do. they are not a hospital, I will have to take him to an er. How long can this go on without serious damage to his kidneys or liver?

Are you giving him an oral antibiotic? My cat refused to eat after only two doses of this after surgery. One in the evening and one the following morning. We took him back and he was given anti sickness pills. He only needed two doses to get back to eating again instead of the reccomened week I now know never to give my cat oral antibiotics again - it was very distressing when he would not eat.

Sorry i forgot to add that my kitten had been in surgery to be neutered and the vet had pulled a couple of milk teeth while he was under -i had not asked her to do this...The antibiotics given were to help his gums heal.

I bet this has much more to do with it than the anesthesia. Do you know what your vets use for dentals? My cats bounce right back... The only one that takes longer is Gracie, but she is older (going on 14). Even so, in about 30 minutes or so she is all good.
My vet said cats come back much much faster than dogs. I would take her back and check her ears - remember, they are responsible for balance, maybe they were just too rough.

they gave him proponal and gas. and an antibiotic, don't know which kind. I didn't wake him to feed him, I am hoping the sleep will help him. He looks comfortble.

This sounds so scary for you....I know it's hard, but it sounds like you are doing everything you can to watch over your kitty.

How are things going? I just caught this thread.

he is eating, and I think the anesthesia is worn off, but he still stumbles if he shakes his head, pretty sure it is an ear issue, and I don't see much improvement. someone told me that her cat had this from an ear cleaning, and the vet gave the cat an "anti dizziness med" but not the name. I wrote back and asked her, but she has not responded. I want to ask the vet to prescribe it.
