By an 8-1 vote the court ruled that what the pack of morons from the Westboro Baptist Church is protected by the First Amendment. I wonder how much a member of that "church" would like it if one of their members died and people gathered to protest with a taste of their own medicine.

As a veteran I find what these people are doing to be despicable. I hate them, literally.

These are hateful, sick people. I would think that their right to free speech ends where someone elses right not to be harrassed begins.

I am with you. They are a group of only less than 10 I think....all family members.

Plus, the father of the dead soldier who brought the case to court, has to pay their legal expenses.

I don't think this is what the founders of our country meant. I don't think they ever realized that the constitution could be twisted like this.

First of all, i want to Thank You for your service to our country!!
These people are loathsome despicable, and vile!!! The fact that they are using the First Amendment to continue their hate-filled rants is immoral!!!
god help their children if any of them grow up questioning their sexual preferences.....let a lone a desire to defend their country

While I highly disapprove of their actions, it is free speech. BUT what does this do to the so called "hate crimes" speeches? Doesn't this cancel them out now. After all, when you talk about certain topics, then its free speech and you cannot charge a person with a hate crime now.......right????

I wonder what it's going to be like having an entire church congregation in their own reserved corner of hell.

I don't understand why they do it. Even if they are hateful ignorant people (which they are), they have to realize that that is literally THE worst way of going getting people's attention. Apparently publicity is worth more than a soul or basic human compassion to these people.

Maybe a few Patriot Riders will stop them down the road and reason with them. I know a few of them, and they can be quite persuasive.

As much as I wanted them to side with that Marine's father, I pretty much knew it would go that way.

It's that old quote, "While I disagree with what you say, I will fight to the death for your right to say it." Ironic, that they are protesting soldiers' funerals when they are the ones who forged their right to do so.

I caught Judge Andrew Napolitano's take on it when it came down, and why this differs from "hate speech" (which he agreed it is, but...). He said that because they bring in a national issue, i.e. the war, gay marriage, it isn't considered targeted hate speech. While they protest soldiers' funerals, and while that is no doubt disturbing (to say the least) to the family, their aim is to reach the wider audience to put their say into the national debate.

I think this one is much like the flag burning issue. It sucks. It makes so many of us SO ANGRY we could spit nails. But because we live in a Free Country with the Constitution and Free Speech, Freedom of Assembly and essentially the freedom to be a jack-wagon out in public, this is part of the trade off. 99% of the time we enjoy and appreciate those Freedoms, but every 1% of the time there is a group of idiots who have to say their stupid things...and they have to be covered too.

They were smart enough not to show up at that little girl's funeral. The little girl who was killed in Arizona, by the man who shot the congresswoman. Eventually they will show up at the wrong funeral.
