Okay, so my mom just let in a cat. It's a calico, and it seems to look pretty healthy. We're keeping it locked in a room away from the other cats and had
her feed.

I never found a stray cat before, so I don't know what to do with it. It has no tags on and seems pretty friendly, so I don't know if it's stray or not. Some people don't have collars on their cats,(mine doesn't wear a collar).
So now my mom is thinking of taking it to the human society, which I am reluctant encase it does belong to someone. Maybe I should bring it to my vet and have them scan the cat for a microchip? It seems pretty healthy looking for a stray. It's really hungry, so we fed it but..should we send it to the human society?

I just don't know what to do with it. And how do you know if it could have rabies or not? Stray cats always make me nervous. But it seems very friendly?

PS. I'm not sure if I have this in the right thread...?

I would be more concerned with keeping the cat away from your own resident cats at the moment than the threat of rabies. Take the cat to the vet and have it scanned for a chip. You can contact your neighbor's to see if they know the cat or the owner. Maybe post a sign or run an ad in the local paper. if you cannot find the owner and cannot keep the cat then bring the cat to a humane society. But in the meantime, do not let the cat near your other cats until you have a plan and the cat has been tested for FeLK and FIV, and given all of it's shots and dewormed, checked for fleas and fixed. Wash your hands after leaving the room and interacting with the cat. How nice of you to take this cat in and try to find the owner and care for him.

Take it to the vet and have it scanned for a chip, then have it examined and dewormed, treated for fleas, and checked for pregnancy, and all the nasties.

Have your vet scan the cat for a microchip. Also you can check your local paper to see if anyone has reported their cat missing. You could also contact your local paper and say you found a cat, see if anyone responds to your ad. Or even ask your neighbors if the cat belongs to 1 of them.

Cat seemed okay overnight. Ate and went in the litter box. But now she doesn't
want to leave. I am going to take her to the vet later today, but I don't think she has a microchip. We tried to let her outside, but now she doesn't want to go back out. It is pretty cold outside. So for now we are keeping her inside. I really hope she belongs to someone, cause we already have too many cats.

Went to the vet and they said the cat is pregnant! No wonder she didn't want to leave and was really hungry. So now my mom is taking her to PetSmart, hoping they can take her or help her with the pregnant cat. Cause we already have 8 cats and can't really have anymore...

Oh dear.... I am happy though that she found you and your mom. Thank you for taking care of her and finding a humane society or rescue for her. Poor dear, I am just glad she doesn't have to fend for herself anymore and have her kittens outside. Please keep us posted on what happens with her. Again, you are doing the right thing - you are saving lives

I was told that I cannot give her any shots or pills while she is
pregnant? Is this true? I'm thinking of at least getting her blood tested, but
I don't think there's anything else I can do?

I am not totally sure on this, but I do know that "killed" vaccines are alright to give pregnant cats, not "modified-live" or "live" vaccines. And no rabies vaccine for a pregnant cat. A vet can answer these questions for you with one hundred percent accuracy!!! Did you find anywhere to bring this cat yet, or are you able to get any help from a rescue??? Sure hope so

I've called around and a lot of cat rescue places are all full. So I ended up taking her to the OSPCA in New Market Ontario. They too said they were full, but did take her anyways. They are not officially open yet. We just couldn't find anywhere to take her. I'm hoping they won't transfer her to another shelter that is a kill shelter, I'm nervous about that. They said they would only put her down if she is sick and she is pretty healthy so i don't think they will.

I hope she will be able to stay there where we will have easier access to her and can check up on her. I don't know if they will make things difficult for me when I do want to check up on her? I am scared that they might at some point put her down or send her to another shelter that will. Since she is pregnant, I am hoping they will keep her there.

The staff seemed pretty nice, so I hope what they were telling me was true. I really hope they don't send her to another shelter. I wish I didn't have to send her to the OSPCA but my dad had enough and didn't want anymore cats, (we have 8 and he's also slightly allergic) especially a pregnant cat. So my mom and I had no other choice. And no one we new wanted to take her. And so many places were full.

I think I did the right thing. It's better I guess instead of being stuck outside when having a litter of kittens. This way they will be healthy and won't get any diseases. Plus they'll have human contact and socialization. So I hope everything will work out and we will be able to see her again when they open up and she goes up for adoption.

PS. If anyone wants to see a picture of the stray I uploaded her photo as my profile picture. I was not sure how else to upload it.

That is a very, very pretty cat!! I hope she will be alright. And you did the right thing for her and for your family.
. Don't be surprised if the OSPCA doesn't give you access to her. Some of these places will not give any information about an animal to the person who relinquished. I don't agree with this but have problems in the past with the same situation. It was very frustrating. I really hope they let you see and visit her. She is lovely and I bet she will get adopted quickly.
