I have recently had to change my cats' diet. As I shared in another post, my cats had gone off of the Taste of the Wild they had been eating. And, when they did eat their dry kibble, they had periods of vomiting. After trying multiple bags of TOTW and contacting the company (to no avail), I started them on the Royal Canin Hypoallergenic food that my other cat is on. I did so since it was a food they had all eaten before. It was also something that I had in the house that could accommodate everyone's needs. And, since I feed a 25% dry/75% wet diet, it was manageable. However, it is not suiting my girls long-term and I have started searching for another dry food.

After speaking with a member from TCS, I had decided to look into either Nutro Max or Royal Canin's Sensitive Skin or Adult formulas (no one has sensitive skin here (aside from my allergic kitty who is on a prescription food), but the formula was a little more well-rounded). I had set on the RC, but I was unable to order it from my source. So, when I was out running errands this evening, I decided to look at some other foods at both PetSmart and Pet Supplies Plus. It was there that I saw Solid Gold's Katz-n-Flocken. Despite my cats having been on a grain-free food, I have since decided to keep them on a food with grains as I think they do better on it overall. And, when reading the packaging of the Solid Gold food, it read very well. However, after talking again to someone from this site, I learned that there are some iffy items on the ingredient list. And, while it reads well, it does so from a human standpoint -- meaning that it may not necessarily be the best choice for my cats. Overall, despite that, it's not a bad food and is solid in some respects.

I had decided to return the food and go for a less expensive option when I discovered that my cats had chewed open a corner of the bag and gone to town on the kibbles that they were able to knock out. So, it was decided that, even though the food is a bit grainy and low in fat, that I'd give it a try and see how my cats do on it. I've read that it's not UTI friendly, but the cats eating it have not had any urinary issues. And, they do eat high quality wet food. My male cat is the one on the prescription diet and so this is of no concern to him. My females are all between 2 and 3 years old and have no major health issues. So, I feel confident about seeing how they fare. Of course, it will be a slow transition, but we will see. I have a couple of friends whose cats have done exceptionally well on this food and have another friend whose cat did not do as well. But, they seem taken by the food so far and only time will tell how they do overall.

Ingredient wise, it's not a bad food. Are there foods that are better? Sure. But, I am going to give it a whirl. Since I feed so much wet, the things that are not necessarily the best about this food are not as weighted. And, I can always make a change if necessary. But, what I want to know is if anyone has fed this food to their cats? If so, how have they done on it? The formula has changed some over the years and my vet has suggested this food for my cats. But, first-hand accounts are always appreciated. For reference, please remember that this is 25% of my cats' diet and that I also feed a wide selection of grain and grain-free wet food along with raw as a treat a couple of times per week. All experiences with Solid Gold's Katz-n-Flocken are welcome -- good and bad. I have made the decision to try it, but it never hurts to see how others have fared.

Choosing a cat food should not be as difficult as it is. I am so thankful for this site and for the members here who help decipher the world of cat nutrition along with me. Thank you in advance for all of your experiences and/or suggestions. They are appreciated.

Like you said, it is very low in fat, and so my cats didn't do so great on it. They got dry coats and just generally looked dull. However, it might work for your cats and your situation. . .you never know until you try! Here's hoping!
