needing a new litter box

Thread Starter
in search of a new litter box at the moment! I discovered tonight someone has been peeing over the box... luckily its on tile and easy to clean up! But now I am searching for a new box! We currently have one that has slightly higher sides, but apparently we need something higher! I dont know if a covered one would be an option but I am debating. Google has a mean streak a mile wide and used to sit on the litter box and guard it.... never had a problem once we switched to a pan style.
So anyone have a certain box they love? We do have a very limited amount of space where the box goes at the moment. (We have a plan for that! But it involves some bathroom remodeling)

These are meant for icing bottles and cans of drinks but they make terrific litter tubs for my cats -- they love these. If you have the following stores near you, they are available right now: Bed, Bath & Beyond, Stater Brothers, Food 4 Less & Ralph's Market. They are available in round and oval shape and in a lot of festive colors to match your decore.

Here's a link to another online shop to purchase these from Kitchen Stuff Plus:

These stay surprisingly clean for months and are so affordable that you can buy several of them for the price of a litter pan designed specifically for cats.

I also find plastic storage boxes from Walmart or Target without the lids work great and come in more sizes than actual cat litter pans.

Sometimes kitties can't get it right even though they are healthy.

Yes, the plastic storage containers work well and believe me I tried them all. I bought the tallest one I could find for Ritz, who pees standing up in the litter box. Her stream is 18 inches high (I measured) so I had to find a box that tall. Dollar Stores didn't carry one that tall; Lowe's/Home Depot/Target/Walmart would. I cut an access hole in it so Ritz could get in and out easily, although I know from other posters that cats can certainly jump up into an 18 inch tall box.
Dome covered litter boxes ("Booda") did NOT work because they are not seal tight, and the pee leaked through the seals. Expensive mistake.

I had the same issue with Potsie he would start in the squatting position and then finish peeing in a standing position. I too used a rubbermaid container or one of those storage bins. Cut a hole (seven inches) and he used it all the time. There were a few times, though, that he would go in and face the back and start peeing right under the entrance and would stand from there, so I had pee to clean up that came out the entrance hole!!

Here's one of the plastic tubs (totes) that we use - I cut the hole either in the side or the end - using the color tubs because they're easier to cut with a box cutter.

Recently I bought a 30 gal tub - works great, too.

The sides are high, and the spray doesn't leave the litter box - yea!

I cut the hole for two reasons: 1. If a cat is unable to jump over the tall walls of the tub - like if he/she is sick - the opening makes for easy access. 2. I've noticed when the cat just jumps out of the tub, he/she spreads litter all over - and having the door helps keep the litter inside .

Here's Jack modelling one of theirs which are just large storage boxes.

Hi there,

I have 10 cats and SOMEBODY in my household of felines has started doing the same thing, the little spray or pee over the side.

I went to our local "Farm Supply" store and bought these pretty high, super jumbo boxes. I have 5 and clean them 2x/day. They are longer so the cats can turn around easily in them and cover more easily.

I also have been using the $5.00 rugs in front of each box that you can get at Wal-Mart to help with excess litter (vacuum a little less this way),

and, from Wal-Mart I have bought those plastic dinner placemats for $1.00 each (in pretty colors and designs ), and put 2 behind and on each side of the litter box (short sides get 1) and put them under the litterbox about 3-4 inches - it catches excess pee, litter, etc.

It's a bit of work with 5 super-jumbo boxes 2x/day, but if you have fewer cats, it should be pretty easy and is so helpful, too. Be sure to get enough extra $1.00 plastic placemats for when there is an accident, so you can get the dirty one washed off and clean, then I spray the outside, rim and a bit of the inside with Advanced Nature's Miracle, then put in a new plastic placemat.

It works really well for me. (I think it's my fluid girl doing it - any way she can get those toxins out is fine with me, I'll be her janitor anyday! :o)

Warmly,

Julie O'
