Ugh

I swear, the woman across the hall from me must be an idiot. She has a habit of leaving her door open (which I don't get.....at all), and she likes to leave it open when she's cooking. Frying!! The smell of the food comes right across to my apartment. I've asked her nicely....(several times)...and even went to management and complained. They agreed - it was rude - and said they'd talk to her. It stopped for awhile.

And here she is, tonight, door propped open, fried food going on the stove!!! It totally makes me so angry I want to scream, "What is wrong with you?!?!?!?" But I controlled my temper, opened my door, said, "Would you please close your door? The food smell is all over my apartment." She said, "Oh? The food?" ....like we had never talked about it. IDIOT!!! She then closed her door, but now my whole apartment smells like freakin' fried food.

As I said to management, why doesn't she just open her own windows, use the fan over her stove, whatever?

Grrrrr......one of the reasons I really do prefer animals to people sometimes.

Yuck!

Keep complaining to management. They will hopefully get sick of hearing from you and do something about that lady.

I bet she does it to get the smell out of her apt and to get the air circulating. I can't believe she leaves the door open!! That's the most amazing part of the story!

oh man, you are a better person than i. i would have gone crazy on her already! we have VERY noisey people living above us and ive had to have a talk with them about their dang kids jumping off of stuff and slamming on the floor, jumping on beds, running back and forth, all kinds of stuff. it has died down, thank god, but if it hadnt there would have been a problem.
IMO apartment buildings shouldnt allow families with young kids to live on any floor but the first one out of respect for the other people that might have to live near them.

One more reason to add to why I'm moving into an RV!

Ewww, and fried food smells the worst! Although I do love eating it

I think you should take a breath, and do what you have to do with out stressing yourself out about it........Maybe put a towel under your door, somehow block the hallway air from coming into your apartment.
I honestly have to say that I would take your neighbor frustration over mine any day! I had upstairs neighbors who blasted their music all day, kids stomping back and forth, at all hours. Physical fights upstairs to the point of me having to call 911. Currently I live above a bar where I have had to deal with loud music at 2am when I have to go to work 4 hours later, arguing with rude bartenders who don't give a ........If I had what you have, I would be so much happier!

Oh, man. I feel your pain, as I also have the noisy neighbors on one side, with the kids sounding like elephants and screaming, and the mother screaming at the kids, but at least the loud bass through the wall has calmed down, since I've talked to her about it so many times. Then the one across the hall with the open-door-syndrome also has a husband and friends who like to slam doors. They go back and forth between floors and constantly slam the stairwell doors.....which I've also talked to them about.

I will say, though, that nights are quiet, on all sides, and, in your situation with the music from the bar, I would have gone crazy.

Very few people in this city seem to care that we all live on top of each other and there's such a thing as trying to be considerate.

I thought at one point, with the woman across the hall, that if it kept happening I would just open my door, put my fan in the doorway and blow it right back into her apartment.

Ewww that is gross... Sorry that that happened and all.

Great minds think alike! That's exactly what I would do, too!

Oh yuck, its bad enough when I make a bacon sandwich the smell stinks my entire house out but even worse that she is still doing it after you have told her and she is acting totally oblivious. Put an old kipper under her door lol.x

Yuck. I know exactly how you feel. When I had my condo, I was on the top (3rd) floor. My neighbors on the first floor were basically chain smokers, and although I never saw them smoke in the stairwell, they HAD to have, or else kept their door open when they smoked, because whenever I came home and opened to door to the unit I was bombarded with the smell of cigarette smoke. I could smell it all the way up to my unit, and sometimes inside. I just got into the habit of keeping a towel at the base of my door, but that was mainly because there was a gap and I hated the thought of paying to heat or cool the world outside my place... I do think it helped with the smoke smell, though.

I am vegetarian and even when I wasn't I didn't like frying foods. It's so nasty smelling, and just leaves a COAT of oil over your entire kitchen. Disgusting. When I get the urge for fried foods I go to a nice sushi place and get some yummy tempura.

That's the main risk you run living above a bar, especially if the bar doesn't own the apartments above it. They make no income off you, so they don't really care if you have a problem. A lot of my friends lived above bars in college, and I can not imagine that being fun for anyone out of the 18-25 age group. Heck, it would have been miserable for me now, and I'm in the 18-25 age group.

Reading your post reminds me of when my son was in high school, and worked at a fast-food joint. He would come home from work with the smell of fried food just clinging to his clothes. Even after I washed his clothes, you could still smell that smell. It's almost impossible to get rid of.

I hate the smell of food frying. I never fry anything - except for hamburgers & bacon, which I rarely ever eat. I love the taste of fried food, but it's not very healthy so I try baking everything I can.

Be glad that you don't have neighbors that have dogs that are allowed to bark all the time.

I like the fan idea. Give her a taste of her own medicine.

Years ago, I had a neighbor that did something very similiar. Except, she propped it open so her large dogs could essentially run out of her apt and use our hallway as their own personal playground. They would pee and poop in the hallway and she would take her sweet time to clean it up, if at all. aside from this being disgusting and unhygenic, a few people at the time were trying to sell their units and to say this was ruining everything would be an understatement.

After a year of complaining to her & the building manager, and this woman's dogs causing a very serious buyer from putting a bid on his place - a neighbor took a very large bucket full of water and threw it point blank into her apt (don't worry - no dogs were hit in the process). I will say, this stopped the problem VERY quickly

I like Ruthy's solution.

Wow. Okay, after reading some of these horror stories, I actually do feel like I could have it worse....the dogs running and peeing and pooping in the hallway made me go "EWWWWW"... - and actually, I think I was in a bad mood yesterday and her being an idiot just added to it.

I like some of the suggestions too. I'll probably just keep telling her, and try the rug or towel under the door, and keep going to management. It's bound to get through sooner or later.

If it doesn't get through, I like the water idea

If it doesn't get thru to management, go to the property management company.
