I've really been thinking it's probably a good idea to do so, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

That is a good, simple step by step of how to back up xp, which is what I assume you have.

Whatever this is, I couldn't get it to open. I back up my files on a thumb drive.

OK, now that I am back on my computer (first post was on my phone) I can say if you have XP, do:

Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Backup

Or, like blueyedgirl said, use an external device and simply copy and paste what you want to save.

I do have Windows XP.

I'm assuming that the Back Up option will walk you through the steps? I'm not all that computer savvy and I'd hate to mess something up if I made a mistake.

Yes, it walks you through what you want to save, and takes you step by step. It's hard to mess up anything permanently in XP, since you can always load it from an older save point which your computer automatically makes every few days.

Thanks, Rad. I'll feel more comfortable knowing that I can't mess anything up if I give it a shot.
