Hi everyone. My cat, Simon, has been having a multitude of problems lately. He'll be 7 years old in May. It all started about a month ago with a severe UTI. The vet took x-rays to see if there was anything else going on and he found a strange mass in Simon's abdominal cavity that he believed was calcified fat cells and was "nothing to worry about". He was put on an antibiotic, a urine acidifier and an anti-inflammatory. He was put on a special diet of wet food (Purina UR ST/OX wet and dry)
2 weeks later, Simon started acting strange again. He wouldn't move and was not the least bit interested in dry food, wet food or treats. I took him back to the vet and their diagnosis was that he was severely constipated. I did see the x-rays and I've never seen a creature with that much poop inside them! Also, the vet that treated Simon this time found a second mass that is higher up from the first mass that was found. The 2nd mass was missed on the first set of x-rays which bothered me a bit. Over 2 days Simon was given enemas, laxatives and fluids. He finally pooped everything out and was able to come home. They sent him home with Lactolose and another antibiotic. We were told to only feed him a diet of wet food for a week or so.
From the time he came home up until less than a week ago, he would only eat a very small amount of food. When he was finished, he would get very worn out looking, lay down and not respond to anything. He wouldn't poop for days at a time, even with the laxative. He seems in better spirits now but I'm still concerned.
For a couple of months, his coat felt disgusting. It was greasy and thin and not at all soft. That has gotten better. According to our vet, he has not lost any weight since they saw him in August. Yet, he looks incredibly skinny. He's skinny on top, along his back bone and then has a gut that hangs down. He was hiding more than usual but that seems to have gotten a little better. Thing is, he's only eating wet food maybe once a day. I feed all of our cats wet food twice a day and they have a little bit of dry food that stays out. I haven't seen him grazing and I can't seem to get him out to eat wet food more than once a day. He's drinking A LOT of water. They vet said that they ran tests for kidney function and they came back "unremarkable". We had another cat that we had to euthanize due to severe kidney failure and she had some of the same symptoms. Though, she was ravenous and Simon barely has an appetite.
I know that I need to take him for a second opinion, but do any of you have any advice that you could give me? Have any of you dealt with anything similar to this? He's a Momma's Boy and I don't want to see him suffer. I want to do right by him. Any advice that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Only vibes - I'd suggest sitting down and writing up a list of what you've observed, the dates, and include results of lab tests, etc (get the records from your vet). Then go to another vet asap. If the other vet agrees with the treatment you've already gotten - well, your mind will be at ease. But sometimes it's easier just giving a typed list of dates, symptoms, etc. to the vet - I always get too nervous and worry that I'll forget something while i'm talking. With the symptoms you're discussing, you should be able to get an appointment very quickly, I think.

Did the first vet run a full blood panel? If not, I'd be asking for that asap. If nothing shows up, you've got a baseline to use in the future.

I think I would take him to another vet. If you have one in your area I would take him to a feline specialist. I hope he gets well and starts feeling better but you need some kind of definitive diagnoses. If he isn't eating enough to sustain himself that can lead to other problems with his liver.

I believe the vet told me that they did a Chem 17 in regards to the bloodwork.

I am furious and disgusted!! I just picked up Simon's records. His bloodwork shows that the has a high ALKP, CHOL, LIPA and HCT. He has a low MCHC (hemoglobin) and a VERY low platelet count! The doctors that he saw said nothing about this and on his records, it indicates that one of the vets that treated him believed these levels were a mistake! Why wouldn't the re-do the bloodwork to be sure?! Why are all these areas of concern being blown off? I am so angry right now that I'm sick! I am taking Simon tomorrow for a second opinion and if something is wrong then that other vet is going to be paying ME for a change! How can a vet GUESS at a diagnosis without doing further testing. In regards to the masses in Simon's abdominal cavity the diagnosis is written as follows: "Calcified Fat Cells??????" How can one guess at that??

that's very disturbing, makes me wonder how common flat out guessing is among some vets. in the end this might be a good thing because now you know that vet is not to be trusted. here's hoping the new vet has his/her priorities straight and gives your guy the best care possible.

That is extremely disheartening and upsetting! Your poor cat could be suffering needlessly due to their complacent attitude. Thank goodness you are going for another opionion with copies of all of the tests. I always go with my gut on these things, if you don't feel satisfied with what a vet is telling you or NOT telling you, get that other opinion!!! Good for you and keep us posted on what the new vet says

Yep I've had a vet accuse me of making up a story about my cat having a seizure...like I would waste $400 on vet charges and tests for nothing. Get real. I went to another vet after that. Not all vets know their stuff.
