Do kittens know when to stop?

I adopted a gorgeous little 4 month old last week (Belvedere). Yesterday, I had him desexed and he wasn't allowed to eat. Today, he is eating all his food and looking for more. Is this because he was so hungry from yesterday or do kittens know when they've had enough food?

I have an 8 year old desexed male (Barney) as well and he will eat and then walk away when he's had enough. He may or may not come back later. I've had to put Barney's food away today or Belvedere will eat that too. Is this just a left over from yesterday or do I need to regulate Belvedere's food?

Kittens are more likely to eat until they throw up, but most kittens do know their limits or learn them very quickly. Since you had to stop his food intake for however many hours before the surgery, he is just making up some of those missed nutrients. I adopted my kitten the day after his neuter and I thought I had adopted two for the first couple days with how much he packed away at each meal.

Thanks for that. I was only giving him small portions when I got him and he would eat it all but seem happy with it. Then he'd let me know when he wanted more and I'd give him another small portion but today....!!! He hasn't thrown up, thank goodness!
