Is my new kitty just lazy? Cat peeing problem!

Hello everyone!

I've tried reading through the other kitty peeing troubles for advice, but my problem seems to be a little bit different.. so here goes!

About 4 months ago a scrawny little black and white kitty walked into my boyfriends apartment, purring and mewling away. He has two large dogs, so he called me to see if he could bring the kitty to my place where he would be safe. We looked for the kitties owners for over a month but finally figured he was abandoned. I took him to the vet and had him all checked out, I wanted to make sure he was healthy to have around my other cat. He is a fixed, declawed male, around 2-3 years old. I feel so bad for him! Abandoned with no claws, he now has a chipped front tooth, is seriously underweight and all ratty. But they gave him the all clear, except for being underweight he is healthy.

But he is an incredibly sweet kitten. He is a cuddler and likes to climb on your lap and knead (aka "make biscuits") on your tummy. So I named him Biscuit. He gets along well with my other cat, an older fat tuxedo named Meatball. And everything has been wonderful except sometimes he pees where he shouldn't!

I have 3 litter boxes set up around my apartment. I keep them very clean, scooping 2-3 times a day, and I add a little baking soda to help with any pee smells. During the day Biscuit is fine using his litter box, at first he seemed scared of the box cover, so I took them off. But about every 2 weeks he will have an "accident" in my bedroom. He doesn't pee on my bed, he pees on whatever is on the floor at the foot of my bed and he only does it when we are sleeping.

It's sort of like he doesn't want to get up and walk all the way to his box so he pees close by! He's peed on my comforter twice, a pair of my pajamas once, and a pair of my pants once. I thoroughly cleaned the floor with some Nature's Miracle stuff, the pet store people recommended that. I moved my bed to a different place in the room and still he peed on something at the end of the bed! So he isn't targeting a specific place on my carpet. It really is like he hops off the end of the bed, pees, and then gets back on.

(I caught him doing it once, he woke me up digging at the blanket to "bury" his pee, so he isn't spraying it's definitely pee!)

I am not really sure what else to do. I took him back to the vet and he doesn't have a UTI. I explained what he was doing to the doctor and she said to try putting a cat box at the end of my bed so I am going to go buy another one to give that a try. But I am not sure what else to do! Do I really just have such a lazy cat that he wont walk the 10 feet to his litter box?

Some cats can be picky about what litter they use.

I'd try switching litter brands, Swheat Scoop or World's Greatest are two good biodegradable ones that can be flushed, or Dr Esley's cat attract is marketed to attract cats with inconsistent litterbox use.

For the time being, I would also restrict unsupervised movement in the house to one room w/ water and litterbox, perhaps a bathroom if you have one that is decent size.

The important thing is to put a stop to the inappropriate behavior ASAP though, and also get a good enzyme cleaner for the missed spots.

When your cat is using the litterbox appropriately (mine almost always go right after eating in the morning), be sure to give it lots of praise, and if you like, their favorite treat. I used to do that with greenies, until the point they were hopping in the litterbox for no reason to see if they could get a treat and attention.

Best of luck!

How nice of you to take in this cute baby!!! It doesn't sound like there is anything stressing the cat out and gets along with your other cat too. You definitely want to break this habit quickly. I first of all wouldn't leave anything on the floor near your bed. Secondly, I would try to put a litter box at the foot of the bed with the Cat Attract litter in it. You could try to confine him to another room at night as well and not allow him access to your bed for awhile.

The area has to be cleaned thoroughly with an enzymatic solution. Either NOK out or Stink Free are two I use. Stink Free is available at Petsmart. If the cat is smelling any of his urine from past accidents, he will naturally want to go there. I don't think your cat is lazy, this is either a medical issue that the vet can't find yet or behaviorial. I might even try to get another urine sample again soon, just to double check. Sometime UTI's don't always show problems in the urine, there could be some stones in the bladder, so an x-ray might be in order too. Hope this helps a bit, and good luck, he sounds like a wonderful kitty

Oh he is a very wonderful kitty. I love him already, even with his pee troubles. I am trying to be patient because the vet had told me that with as ratty and skinny he was when we found him he had been a stray for a while. So I don't expect perfect behavior right off. I just want to get this one thing taken care of!

I have been using World's Best Kitty litter, it smells so much better than the old clay litter I was using and fortunately my old cat took to it well. I will try to go over to the pet store tonight to see if they have any of the cat attract stuff and a better cleaner. After reading a few more posts it seems like maybe the Nature's Miracle isn't strong enough.

I do praise him when he does use his box during the day. But I will try reinforcing this with treats and more petting!

If all else fails then I have a good sized bathroom that I can close him in at night with a littler box and food. Thank you very much for the suggestions! Off to the pet store again!

How many cats do you have? If you have more than 2 cats, you might want to add another litter box. Also try adding Cat Attract litter to what you're using to see if that helps.

^ True that. Rule of thumb was cat+1 litterbox. So 2 cats get 3 litterboxes.

The OP stated in their first post they have 3 litterboxes.

That said, I'd look closely at several things:
1) the litter you're using
2) the size/shape of your litterboxes
3) the location of your litterboxes

Here is an article on litterbox maintenance. (note there are several pages) It may seem basic, but from dealing w/ a sprayer myself I've found it definitely helps to go back to the basics!

I would defintely try putting a litterbox at the foot of your bed where he's been peeing. At first I'd try either non-scoopable clay litter, or some other fine grained clay litter in there, with cat attract litter additive (Cat Attract litter IMO would be worth the investment). For the time being try to keep everything picked up off your floor, too.

This also begs the question - are you absolutely certain he isn't peeing elsehwere during the day you don't notice? From the sounds of it he has a taste for the soft things. My kitty who was having "out of the box" experiences I didn't realize he was peeing elsewhere.....until I smelled it.

Stephanie was asking how many cats, not litterboxes.

Hello again! Thank you for all of the comments!

I have 2 kitties. My newest one is Biscuit, the 2-3 year old rescue and pee problem kitten. And Meatball, my 20 something pound tuxedo kitty. He is about 9 years old I've had him since he was a little rescue baby. They get along well, Biscuit likes to chase around Meatball, which is good because Meatball is a little chubby!

I have 3 litter boxes set up, I am going to add another tomorrow at the end of my bed as suggested by the vet. I'm spending the night away from my place tonight so the kitties were closed out of the bedroom. The boxes are spread throughout my apartment, I figured they should be separate enough that each kitty could have privacy.

So far I haven't caught him peeing elsewhere. I work at home so I am able to keep a good idea on him during the day. He seems to only do it when I am sleeping. He does like to snuggle in freshly washed laundry though. So does my other cat, I think that is because I use lavender scented dryer sheets. I will definitely go around my place and sniff check though!

Thank you for the link on litter box maintenance! There were lots of things that I hadn't considered! Going to make sure I am cleaning the box at the same time each day, etc.

My Sasha does that sometimes. She used to do it a lot, so I put a litter box right by the bed where she was peeing, and now she uses that instead....guess it was too tiring for her to walk to the bathroom where the box used to be! About a week ago she hopped off the bed and just pee'd right next to the litter box - it was almost as if she hadn't left enough time to go anywhere else. She was a shelter cat who had been abandoned too, not sure that that makes any difference.

Well.. yesterday I switched to the Cat Attract litter and this morning I found that Biscuit had peed on a t-shirt that I left on the couch last night. I purposely made sure there was no clothes or anything interesting for him to pee on on the floor. So it sort of boggles my mind that he would jump onto the couch and climb onto a pile of pillows to pee on my shirt.

Both cats used their litter boxes several times yesterday during the day, so I guess now my next option is to start locking Biscuit in the bathroom overnight with food and a litter box.

Is he only peeing on things with your scent strongly on them? Like your clothing or blankets you've slept under?

I don't remember if you've mentioned this or not. Do you run Feliway diffusers in your home?

Does the cat seem to be attracted directly to the scent of the lavender dryer sheets? You could try lavender scented litter from Ever Clean available at Petco or if that is too pricey, get dried lavender flower herb and add it to the litter that you have. Since it is only one cat, how about sticky strip Puppy Pads? I have lots of bad Tomcats that go for the laundry. It gets to be a daily nuisance.

If you neuter your "tomcats", the spraying and marking problem you are having will go away and won't have to be a daily nuisance. Again, why are not your cats S/N, I asked about this on another thread in this forum too. Just wondering???

Both of my cats are very attracted to lavender dryer sheets. Whenever I do laundry and I am folding it on the living room floor both kitties will climb on the laundry piles and lay out them. Sometimes I leave the used dryer sheets on the floor and the kitties will roll around on them, rubbing their faces on them. So they definitely like the lavender smell!

I have been using the Cat Attract litter mixed in with the World's Best Litter. I have 4 litter boxes set up now, 2 out in the living room, one by the end of my bed, and one in my bathroom. Both kitties seem to really like the new litter, before they would just hop in, pee, and hop back out, but now both spend a lot more time digging around.

I also got a black light bulb, put it into a lamp, and examined my rooms for pee! And ICK! I think when I had the lids on the boxes Biscuit might have been peeing on the outside of the box. I also found a few specs that I had missed when cleaning up the accidents in my bedroom. Since I cleaned those up I haven't seen any more carpet sniffing.

I dont have the Feliway diffusers. There was some kind of plugin cat scent thing at Petsmart, but it was quite expensive (I think $40-50 and another $30 for extra cartridges) so I didn't pick it up. So far there have been no new accidents though!

One thing that I did notice was that the shirt and shorts he peed on were ones that I had worn to the dog park with my boyfriend. And the 2 times he peed on my comforter my boyfriend was sleeping over. Since my boyfriend has 2 dogs I wondered if Biscuit was upset with the dog smell.. or maybe he just doesn't like my boyfriend! He is a very very clingy kitten, sticks to my side constantly all day.

Again, thank you everyone for all of the helpful comments and suggestions! Hopefully this will be a nice pee free weekend!

Sounds like you have it all worked out and a good plan!! Yep, those Feliaway plug-ins are very expensive at Petsmart. Another member posted about how you can get them on Amazon on-line for much less. I will be buying mine that way from now on. It is crazy at how much those are. And, those black lights work so well, don't they??!! I couldn't believe it when I used one for the first time as well. But you can surely pinpoint all of the problem areas that way. I guess with your Biscuit, if you keep your dog park clothes off the floor, you will be alright. I have heard so many stories like this with some cats and peeing on their owner's clothes due to "off" smells, that I am careful with my clothes now too. Hope all keeps going well with you kitties using the litterboxes you now have set up
