My cat Sophie had a litter of Kittens Feb 16th. They are 11 days old today. When she had them she had a little bit of a sneeze which has disappeared finally. But now two are sneezing and one of them has mucus around her eyes. I'm worried because they are not very old and I know there immune systems are not the best prepared for a sickness. So, Should I give it a few days and see if they get better or should I take them to the vet ASAP? This is the first litter of kittens I've taken care of and I just don't want them to die over something that could be fixed by me or a vet. Your advice will be HIGHLY appreciated!

Oh no! Well, I am not an expert and I've never really had to take care of newborn kittens. BUT, sneezing and eyes that have thick discharge (not clear discharge) spells out upper respiratory infection to me. If I were in your situation, I would honestly call my veterinarian right away. Good luck to you and your babies!

I wouldn't wait, I'd take them to the vet as soon as I could, if I were you.

Poor babies! I would definitely get them checked out for sure if you haven't yet. I hope they are doing better.

Kittens almost never get over it without veterinary treatment. Some veterinarian's make this error themselves and kittens pass out from lack of treatment. I really hope you took the kittens to a veterinarian by today -- the symptoms described require injections of antibiotics and meds to counteract and remedy the kittens.

Vet ASAP, kittens at this age have no immunity to fight off anything and will go downhill in a matter of hours. Sorry the babies are getting sick, they need help

I took the babies to the vet. He informed that a good paranoid mom is better then one that isn't. He checked them all and they all were giving a perfect bill of health. He said they were the healthiest kittens he had seen in a long time. And that Rexy who had gunk in one eye had just got something in it.
Thank goodness for healthy babies!!!

I had a kitten that had a problem similar to that -- My vet had to open his little eye early and gave him the usual optical ointment that he always gives my cats: Bacitracin-neomycin-polymixin ophthalmic ointment. I also had another excellent eye drop at home on hand from http://www.falconpharma.com/Falcon-pharmaceuticals.asp They have a lot of fantastic remedies and my fave standard catch-all is their
Neomycin/Polymyxin B/Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension eye drops

It is a wonderful medication to keep on hand for kittens and cats. My kitten's eye was beautiful again in less than two days.

Just a reminder that you shouldn't use any OTC or meds you have at home on your pets w/o consulting with your vet first. While they may look the same/similar to vet meds - in many cases they are not & could cause severe harm to your pet.
