I am asking for vibes for Pixie. She was one of the feral's I trapped in December. You can read about her on the Feral Forum, S.O.S. Two sleek black sisters...

She has become quite ill. Chronic URI's, eye infections, and now ringworm. She is at a shelter and I have been praying for her to be adopted. This is a huge set-back now and she is quarantine with some other ringworm cases there at the shelter. The shelter staff is doing a great job caring for her and she has been on different meds. to control the URI's. I am sure she has a compromised immunity at the moment and the ringworm took over and she couldn't fight it off.
for Pixie Bear.

I posted vibes on the other forum, but more here is a good idea. I'm praying for her, too.

Hi
. Well, Pixie is not doing well at all. And I am in between a rock and a hard place. She needs to get out of that environment and into foster care. She is very depressed and her eyes are both swollen still with conjunctivitis, not going away at all. She has ringworm too. On one ear, on her cheek and two new spots on the back of her head. Here is the problem. I had a ringworm nightmare twenty years ago with some rescue kittens and it was just awful. I am too worried to bring Pixie here right now and risk the spread of ringworm to my other cats. Pipsqueak has a slightly compromised immune system and gets sick very, very easily. He is on L-Lysine everyday for this. Plus, I would have to keep her completely secluded and the only place I have is the furnace room, which is very dark and depressing. At least at the shelter, she is getting held and pet often, and sees alot of activity. If she didn't have the ringworm, I would bring her home here to get her well. Jane, the cat health director at the shelter has had along with me, two other foster mom's wanting to take Pixie in. But, Jane doesn't want to risk her foster homes getting ringworm either. What would you do??? I feel so sick and sad about Pixie and so responsible. I look outside and see Yogi and Dixie (Pixie's mom) everyday and they are so healthy and happy. And Magilla, she is doing so well in my home with my other cats and has fit right in. Avery now has a new home, and I am thrilled about that. But, Pixie, her life is just terrible right now. I never expected this to happen to her and now she is stuck there at the shelter in quarantine with ringworm, and not even up for adoption of course. It is quite a predicament. thanks for continued vibes, she needs them desperately

Is she being treated by a vet for both problems? If not, I'd make sure that was happening. Not sure if the person you said is a vet.

If she is being seen by a vet, I'd ask the vet how long until the ringworm is controlled.

I think I'd look for a way to bring her home and isolate her from your other cats, even if that inconveniences them or the people. She may need to stay in a dog crate in the basement (maybe not the furnace room) and shut it off to the other cats. Or maybe she has to stay in a crate in the bathroom or a bedroom.

Anyway, that's what I'd do, and you asked. I'd get her to my own vet. With scrupulous hygiene after handling her (which I hope they are doing at the shelter ) the ringworm can be contained. I think. Any other opinions or experience with this out there?

I have a dog crate you could borrow. I'll even deliver it to you today. Send me a PM and we can discuss it on the phone.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Can you afford to have her stay at the hospital of your vet? Back when Gary and I earned money, LOL, we would have sick rescues stay at the vet and be cared for there while they got better. We'd visit every day, bring toys, make sure the crate was sprayed with Feliway, give them a hidey bed we could throw away when kitty was better.... but once Tuxie got sick with his autoimmune disease, we could not foster at home anymore, period. So we did our fostering by proxy at our vet.

Is that a possibility? Not ideal - but then you KNOW she'd be getting proper treatment. It seems to me the ring worm ought to be improving by now? Is it spreading at the shelter, or do they have a proper quarantine process?

Just another option.

The other thing to do is just trust that she's being properly taken care of. If they have proper quarantine process there, then it's just a matter of her sticking it through the treatment course. Doesn't ringworm take a few weeks?

I know you feel guilty, but you did was was best for Pixie! She deserves a chance for a furrever home, and that was the best way to go about it! You can't hold yourself responsible for what happened after that. These things happen - and I do expect the shelter is managing it! ??? !!!

for Pixie and
for you!

Robin, I do have crates and one of this Midwest cat playpens I could use. Thanks so much for the offer of the crate. Very nice of you. I do not think she has been seen by a regular vet. And I did discuss that with Jane this weekend as a matter of fact. So I will be bringing her to the vet this week. I am really worried and stressed at thinking of bringing her home with the ringworm. The shelter does have a protocol of disinfecting yourself after handling the ringworm kittens. They have six cases at the moment and it seems to be under control now. And there were two earlier cases about six weeks ago that are now fine. The shelter is excellent at caring for these cats and I am impressed with the care.

Laurie, some great options and I never thought of the boarding at the vet. It is something I will look into when I bring her to the vet this week. The thing though with ringworm is that it is at least a good six weeks before you get a handle on it and that would be quite expensive to keep her there the whole time. But I will certainly ask the vet his opinion about me bringing her home to recover. Plus I can get more facts about ringworm from the vet during the visit. I want to do whatever I possibly can for her and at the same time I need to keep my own cats healthy. The shelter is doing a great job caring for her. I just want the ringworm cured fast and with ringworm there is no fast cure. It just takes time. Thanks for your continued support

I don't get it. Gray had ringworm once, and I treated it with a cream, and neither of the other cats got it (or any of us). Why isn't poor little Pixie getting better?

I'm glad she's going to see a vet. Many thousands of vibes for all of you...

Aw, sweet Pixie. I know how bad you feel.

Some great news, it has been a wonderful day!
. Took Pixie to my trusted vet this afternoon. He said the ringworm is looking totally under control and the spots are "drying up and calming down". He would do the same protocol that the shelter is doing, so that is good. She has about two more weeks of the sulfur baths and she will be done
. A mild case.

As for her conjunctivitis, he would also put her on the same eye drops and ointment that AHS is using. Gentomicin and Erythromycin eye ointment. So this was all good news and I know the shelter is doing exactly what is best for Pixie. He said that with these viruses it can take a couple of weeks for her eye tissue to settle down. He said that she really looks quite well under the circumstances and now I feel much better about the situation for Pixie.

When I got back with Pixie to the shelter to talk with Jane, she told me the best news and she was thrilled about this as well!!!!
One of our foster's is bringing back some kittens to the shelter on Wednesday that are now ready to go up for adoption and she has a room in her home that she uses only for fostering!
. She has had her eye on Pixie during all of this but couldn't do anything until those kittens were ready. She offered to take Pixie and one of the other almost recovered ringworm kittens. She only has one cat of her own and she has a big bedroom to quarantine Pixie and Hank (a really cute orange/wht. kitten). She wll have them for two weeks and then they will come back to the shelter and Pixie will be back up for adoption very soon
. I am so relieved because that will be a better situation for Pixie at the moment than in my basement in a cage in one of my back rooms. And she will have a friend to play with.
.

Thanks again for the vibes, and I will be talking with the foster mom for updates!!!!!
