Bonjour de Paris!

Having problems posting photos....

Anyway, a big hello from Paris! I have really enjoyed looking at this site and have discovered a lot of valuble info. My kitten is a ten month old Turkish Angora. We found him trapped inside the engine of a car in our underground shared garage. He was approx fourteen weeks old, very dirty and hungry. Since the death of our beloved cat eight years ago affected us so deeply, i had always thought that i would never have another.
Gilbert (pronounced in the French way) however had different ideas and charmed us straight away. It seems that he had been litter trained and purred deeply while eating his first meal - he still does! The next morning I went to the local vets to ask if anyone had lost him and to check the area for missing posters. I came home with a litter tray, food, toys!!!
He is now fully harness and lead trained and i walk him every day. He is a typical Turk with loads of energy who finds whatever you are doing of huge interest. Hope i can work out how to post some photos so you can all see what a handsome boy he is!

A big thanks to everyone for their lovely replies - Gilbert's fame grows!!! He is quite the local celebrity here. I bought a special cat carrier when i was last in Italy - its like a back pack that you wear on your front. It has a top flap that he leans out of when i take him for a walk. We are always getting stopped when we are out and about

Gilbert is certainly a gorgeous cat. I can't tell from the photos what colour his eyes are. Does he have the odd coloured eyes of the Turkish Van?

His eyes are amber, because we found him he does not have any papers. I am pretty much certain however that he is a full Turk. I had never heard of this breed until a man on the street told me that he was one!
He has the classic Turk build - very fine boned with back legs longer than his front. I didnt realise how fine his bones were until he first jumped into the bath - his legs are like twigs! He clearly shares his love of water with his Turkish Van cousins He has a full angora coat with no undercoat along with full "britches" ,long fur inbetween his pads and is starting to grow a mane. Oh yes and a HUGE plume of a tail - the photos dont do it justice.

He is certainly lovely, but he may be a cross-bred as his colouring is not a Van. They should have a base colour of white, with colours only on the head and tail, apart from maybe a few spots. But the real thing is the eye colour - usually one green and one blue. If you google the breed you will see lots of pictures of what they should look like. But I am not detracting from him, he is a really beautiful cat, whatever his breed.

Hi again,
I know that he is not a Van - he is the wrong build and as you pointed out the wrong markings. I think that he is a Turkish Angora who are, i suppose cousins of the Van and can be almost any colour. There is also another Turkish breed called ( i think ) Keidiski who are very rare and all white in colour. There is quite a good thing on Youtube - If you tap in cats101 followed by a breed name you can see a short film about nearly any breed that interests you as well as the angora and van.

I'm really sorry - I messed up and didn't read your original post properly! He is really lovely with a gorgeous tail. And it's great you can take him for walks - he looks like he is enjoying himself. The Bois is a great place - do you live in that part of Paris?

I didnt realise that my husband had put more photos up... He has clearly got the hang of it now
No worries, i found it all very confusing when i first starting researching his breed. As i said i had not even heard of them before and we will never know if he is pure for certain.
Yes we live quite near to the bois. Its the only place we can take him as he has been "banned" from our local park. We were escorted from the premises as pets are not allowed... The bois is not ideal though, its pretty dirty (we worry about needles) and there is also a lot of ahem "activity" that goes on there. Like Hampstead Heath if you know what i mean. If you can reccomend somewhere nice to go a shortish drive out of Paris, we would love to know.

Is Fontainebleau too far for you? The forest there is good for long walks. Mind you, I once saw a cat being walked on a harness in the Luxembourg Gardens! Not ideal for tree climbing, though.

What a lovely boy is your Gilbert! And he looks very sweet, too.

Welcome to TCS!
Welcome!! He is BEAUTIFUL!! I have to ask; how is his name pronounced? I'm not very familiar with French pronunciations.
OMG Gilbert is absolutely beautiful. Welcome to you both.
