My House

A while ago, there was a thread of our houses. I didn't know how to post then, so here it is.

This must be early spring or fall, there is still firewood on the porch. I usually have a couple wicker chairs and a small table out there. About 10 years ago, I put on a new porch deck. The old one was millions of years old and had cracked so badly.

You can't see it really well, but on the right side off the back is the area where my kitties live. There are two rooms in that section. They can watch out the windows on both sides of the house. Then off the back is their enclosure. There is a ravine that runs along the left side of the house and cuts through our back yard. There is a patio along the right side also. I'd love to put a deck there and get rid of the concrete. Up north it cracks so badly in the winter.

Under the front windows, I plant three mounds of coral impatiens. That's the only flower I grow because of all the shade. On the other side of the road is the creek. Right now, it won't be long before the ice breaks up and it's fun to watch the huge sheets flowing, crashing into eachother as they go.

I can't wait to see my lawn green again!

Here are the kitchen and living room.

I used to have a Little House on the prarie kitchen.. Old beadboard cabinet and a farmers sink with a skirt across the front. And it was nice. But, I just wanted a nice kitchen before I left this earth. DH put down the floors, which isn't easy when the underlay is bowed here and there. Nothing is even.
Wall papering is a nightmare. Ceilings aren't plumb. The window over my sink looks into the kitties area. So I am always within sight and sound of them.

The livingroom is nice, but again, floors aren't straight. You could put a marble at one end and it would slowly find its way to the other. It's nice when the cats play with a ball! The windows are old and drafty. Over the couch, you can see a picture of the house an old friend of my dads did for me. It won honorable mention in the county fair.

Thanks for all the nice comments. It isn't new, and it has a lot of problems. It is constant work. But I love it. I will never leave. You could offer me a beautiful mansion, and I would turn it down. I am never happier than when I am home.

If anyone ever comes to NYS, look me up and we will have coffee, ice tea or whatever .....on the porch. You are always welcome!

Thanks Ruthy! It's so old though. And I have discovered ways to hide a multitude of sins!

I used to crawl out those little windows above the porch to chip ice!

What was I thinking????

In 08, our road was closed for 7 months, from April to October. We sat out there and met so many people who came down to look at the work the crew was doing. I felt like I was in Mayberry! People we wouldn't normally know, we were talking with for that time.

It is where I trapped Spot and Beeba and saved them from the traffic before the road opened again.

Thanks!

Thanks Marianne! The porch used to be concrete and was not even with the front of the house. It was all cracked and sinking. The bottoms of the pillars were rotting.

My friend put on the deck and I stripped the pillars down and repainted them.

You could have given me the crown jewels and I wouldn't have been as happy as when I got a new porch.!

Ya know, sometimes on hot summer mornings, I am out there at 4:30ish. It's nice to watch the sunrise. Before the morning traffic. We are a shortcut to the main highway from up north. So morning and evening gets kind of busy.

But the middle of the day is pretty quiet. Thanks for looking!

Thanks Laurie! It will never be done tho. As soon as one thing is finished, something else comes along.

Been working on it for 31 years. Now the stuff we did back then needs doing again!

Thanks jcat! The lr floor had a ancient wall to wall rug that NEVER would wear out. But had stains of pepsi that my daughter always spilled! So one summer, I sat down with a claw hammer and nail puller.

First the rug came up. Then plywood sheets. Then roofing paper! Each time I got down to the wood, it was like opening a present! I was alone then. But I kept shouting...wow look at that!

Don't want to know what the neighbors thought!

Thanks for looking! My dad, who owned it would never repair anything until it broke. And even then.....

One time I was sleeping in my room upstairs. The attic is a walk in off my bedroom. It was pouring out and about 3 am. I hear him calling, "water is coming in my kitchen". He had an apartment in the rear. So I go in the attic and the roof was leaking like a sieve! Putting down plastic tarps at 3 am is not fun!

When dad passed, the first thing I did was fix the roof!

Thanks Cococat! Sometimes I think it is too large just for two people. But it really isn't as large as it looks.

The kitties have half of it!!

That's funny you said that. When we first moved in, I wanted to call it Heaven Hill Farm. But my dad said that sounded like a religious retreat!

Right now the ravine is full of water that backs up under the road through a culvert when the creek rises. We have no sump pump and there is a natural drain in the floor in the cellar. I used to get so nervous watching that no water came back up through the pipe and into the cellar.

It never has, but I lost a lot of sleep!

Thank you! Yes it does have those claw feet and casters. I see pics in magazines now and then of these tables.

It was my moms kitchen table. When she died, I took it to live here. It has lots of memories.

Thanks! When my kitties used to go out, they would sit in the windows. In the painting, he put cats on the porch and chickens in driveway. I used to have a little flock of hens.
