New kitten! playing with his poop?

Hey guys, So I'm new to the pet owning thing and I recently adopted a kitten and he is 6 months old now. He's a spoiled little brat. the main problem is, he likes to go into his litter box and scoop out his poop (that's hardened and covered in litter) and play with it like its a ball. I come home from class or work and there's usually 1-4 pieces of poop laying around on the floor. At first I thought it was because his litter box was full, but even after he goes poop once, he still does it.. so i'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I really need to figure out what's going on and how to fix it because it's causing problems for other people that live in the house and I don't want to get rid of him.. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have never experienced it personally, but did have a friend with a similar problem and although she didn't effectively get them to stop, eventually they will grew out of it. It is clear from the tone of your post, your cat has toys to play with, and that you play with her as well. An obvious first step would be to ensure there are adequate things for her to do alone, so it isn't as if she never has anyone/anything with whom to interact. Despite the real toys, though, and depending on the back story or prior circumstances she may be going through a period of adjustment or development just not knowing what to do with herself. They aren't enough.

So if the behavior doesn't diminish even with various efforts, get a top-entry litter box. It's harder for them to bring and fling their poop about when they have to jump out of the litter box using top entry.

Good luck !

Those top-entry boxes are expensive, though! You can get an 18-gallon (or larger; but don't get anything smaller than the 18-gallon) Sterilite tote and cut a hole in the top with a hot knife or a box cutter. Just as good and much cheaper.

Hi Gerry, Oh dear Lord, I am laughing so hard. I know this really is not funny, but seriously, I am picturing this and I can't help it. What a funny cat. I guess he likes stinky, poopie toys. Ok, I will get it together for you.

I just think your kitten will outgrow this just find some really small poop sized (ok, sorry) toys and roll them in catnip before you leave so your kitty is more drawn to those toys than what is in the litter box. I know this is a problem, but at least your kitten is having healthy poops!!!! I can't be the only person who thinks this is funny here. You have either a very funny cat with a great sense of humor, or your cat is annoying all of you on purpose I really wouldn't worry, your kitten will get bored with this poop-playing soon.

Probably just plain bored, has to entertain himself somehow.

Perhaps some rattle mice: http://www.amazon.com/Cat-Toy-Realis...8862960&sr=1-3

Or some cheap bouncy balls, a kickeroo (mine love that one), turbotrack and even just some old cardboard boxes or paper bags or long big twisty tie (not too small of one in case they might eat it), or if you have a piece of spiral tubing used to wrap around loose cables, they tend to like that stuff.

I'm away at work for 13 hrs and watch em on my webcams around the house, and the younger the kitty, the more they like to play for sure, and will smack things around the floor to simulate catching insects and mice when no real ones are around.

If he's picking poop over decent toys, then a different litterbox setup would be the ticket.

LOL! My new kitten Isabella plays in her box but she hasn't gone as far as to fling her poops out of her pan. I just figured it was a crazy kitten thing.

Hopefully it's something he'll grow out of. My kittens have gross litterbox habits to, but they've never played with their poops before. Midnight won't use the litter box unless he has a toy, or Luna in there with him. He lays in his litter, rolls around in it, curls up and tries to sleep in there. Luna will sometimes try to block him from getting in the litter box.
