I am new to being OWNED by a cat. We have a 2 year old rescue that we have had for two weeks tomorrow. The cat has been great with litterbox use, eating, playing etc. The question I have pertains to "biting". When I wear shorts the cat seems to be very interested in my ankles. He puts his paws on my feet and then mouthes my ankle area. It does not hurt and it is not out of anger. I call it biting but it really is not. Sometimes he does this when you pet him also - he will sort of chomp my hand and then lick it. My other question is how do you keep cats off of furniture/counters that you do not want them on? Is there a natural repellant? He stays off everything except an antique buffet that I do not want him on!!!!

I found the text in this book spot on, but the illustrations aren't helpful at all. Good over all book

This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

The biting sounds like him trying to engage in play. My kitten will wrap his arms around my wrist, bite my arm, and kick my hand when I've overstimulated him from petting as well as when he wants to play.
For keeping him off the counters, you can try double sided pet tape along the edges, or aluminum foil/oven rack on top as many cats don't like the weird feeling. Another option is the ssscat which is a motion sensor attached to compressed air, and fires a short blast when a cat moves in front. Basically, you need to make the buffet as unappealing of a place to sit as possible. You can try citrus peels as well, since cats tend to not like citrus smells.

He's going after your ankles in play.

used to do that. We made a game out of it. He'd also do it in the middle of the night while everything was dark and I was trying to get to the bathroom lol. Biting your hands can be in play to. That's how I play with Midnight. Biting when your petting him could also be because he's over stimulated. That happens to some cats after they've been petted for awhile.
You could try using a product called Ssscat, we bought it, but we haven't used it yet. To keep your cat off of the furniture you don't want him on.

I will try the aluminum foil. I also have a question about food. I am feeding Blue Buffalo Dry Indoor Adult formula and Blue Buffalo wet. The dry says to feed 1/2 cup per day for a cat that is up to nine pounds. The wet food says to feed 2 cans per day. Both of these measurements are based on a wet or dry diet only. So I am feeding 1/4 cup dry in the evening and 1/2 can of wet in the morning with 1/8 cup dry. I don't want to over feed or under feed. He is really good about eating 2X per day. I was thinking maybe 1/2 can wet with 1/4 cup dry in the morning and 1/4 dry at night if what I was doing is not enough.
