Childhood food allergies/adult food intolerances?

My recent diagnosis has me thinking - my DH is currently having a lot of GI symptoms himself. Pretty bad gastritis and some GERD. I had another errand at the hospital last Wednesday and thus didn't get a chance to broach the subject with his doctor.. So far modifying his diet - very little caffeine, low fat, cutting out most junk food (I don't know what he snacks on when I'm not there to watch him..
), nothing really spicy, etc and medications are not helping him very much.

I know my DH is mildly lactose intolerant. He knows it too and so far resists changing his eating habits/forgets to take pills for it.
I am also, but pretty much only consume dairy in cheese (aged for the most part) and butter since the pills don't work very well for me. (so meals are often milk free)
As a child he had several food allergies (along with many other allergies that he still has and takes daily meds for). The allergies didn't cause anaphylatic reactions even back then. He thinks they've all mostly went away.. But we both know some foods still bother him. Coconut can make his lips swell up (looks like a humorous poorly done collagen injection - fish lips!
) and some nuts make his throat itchy. As a child he was very allergic to corn.

Has anyone here developed food intolerances as an adult (to say soy, nuts, corn, etc) that where similar to childhood allergies that they supposedly grew out of? Or know of anyone who has as an adult?
When I look this sort of stuff up the results are less than helpful...

I'm considering calling his doc's office after lunch and seeing if he can spare a minute. I'm not sure whether this route would turn up much or be useless, though.

I question this because some of his symptoms are similar to mine (diarrhea after certain non dairy foods, stomach pain and nausea with certain foods, gas... really bad gas) and that he does have some joint pain in joints that don't appear to have anything wrong with them on x-rays (like I get).
His doctor has mentioned Reglan as a potential med to try next and I really don't want him on that.

Hmm....my food allergies all came on in my teen years or later. At first it was just stuff with MSG. Now I am sensitive to Kiwi and avacado; but it doesn't hurt my stomach it just makes my throat itch. Popcorn will make my mother sick and I know sometimes milk based things irritate her stomach too. But it's not enough to really modify her diet too much; she just doesn't eat those things all the time. (Like ice creams or buttered popcorn) I dont know that she had any sensitivity to them as a child. I think I was a teen when the popcorn started bothering her and ice cream not too long before that. Not sure this reply is any help at all.... LOL

^Lactose intolerance is pretty common for most adults. We evolved not needing milk after childhood nursing. The popcorn would depend on how it's made. She'd likely be fine if she bought the kernels and air popped them, then only added a little salt or other purer flavorings. Slathering on butter or whatever that fake junk is that the microwave popcorn contains is less than ideal for anyone. (I hate popcorn, btw, it slices up my gums and the roof of my mouth terribly.
) You itching from fruit sounds more like an allergy, which I remember you having that bad breakout not too long ago so, so should be checked. Kiwi and avocado are added to some skin care products.

I did call the doc who got back to me and suggested that it could possibly be a problem with artificial preservatives and additives. That will be fun to try eliminating, DH loves snacks and junk food.
Ironically my diet has the side effect of cutting much of that out so if he eats more of the same things I do that could work for him. Of course I'm happy eating the same thing for 3-5 days in a row and he's not...
The doc didn't think it could be his past or existing allergies, but didn't say that it 100% was not related.

I think at least a few people on here have mentioned MSG and migraines? (and also a few of us that get sick from artificial sweeteners) So it would be along the same lines as that.

When I was little I was allergic to milk and milk products. I had to take pills before I had any. We were coming home from a vacation when I was about 8 we stopped to get ice cream. Forgot to give me pills first and nothing happened. My parents tried again a few days later with ice cream, and nothing happened. Since then I wasn't allergic to milk anymore. I guess I out grew it.

I don't really have food allergies, as I got older I got more and more allergies like to flowers, trees, grass, the outside lol.

Mine have changed over the years... had only a few food allergies as a child but the onslot hit in my teens
due to alot of drs practicing and not knowing...Though like the old adage your body is redone every 7 yrs mine change every so often.. Ie for 5.5 yrs I could NOT touch gluten to the pt that I could not cook anything with it ... Today, I can have two servings a day. I dont have issues with pine trees like I did as a kid( kinda good since there is a forest behind my backyard
)

Of course I have found out that most of my issues are immune deficiency related( yes allergies and intolerance's are immune issues but not on the same scale ) and not truly allergies cept for Shrimp( teen onset) and dust ( babyhood on)... Chocolate and tomatoes have been with me for decades but never worsened or got better

Yeah I always suspect the Additives first : anything you look up and get a chemical only make up for
.... artificial colors get me alot ( no red or yellow for me)... natural and artificial flavors are suspect ( garlic flavor in one food comes from beets but is is "natural")....

My Dh had all sorts of allergies when younger from a large variety of sources, had to take shots.
Now he no longer takes shots but there are certain foods that will set him off occasionally. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Or in small quantities they won't but large quantities they will. Stuff like breaking out in hives or his throat closing up.

^Mine had shots, too. Most of his reactions where mild, triggering asthma attacks as a child. Some allergies still do. His mother did verify that some foods would upset his stomach.. so I have no idea where we'll go with that info.

Oh and the bit about garlic flavoring and beets is interesting! DH is allergic to them.

Very interesting question; when I was a kid I would get terrible rashes that the dr. attributed to food allergies. I couldn't have been more than 5; I remember being the only kid in my kindergarten class who couldn't have chocolate milk because the dr. said I was allergic to chocolate. He also said no tomatoe products, fish, or strawberries. When I went to a different grade school for 1st grade, I drank chocolate milk without my parents knowing---and nothing happened! Turned out I wasn't allergic to anything the dr. had told my parents I needed to avoid.
In my 30s I had allergy testing and discovered several allergies, none food related. The rashes from when I was a kid where eventually attributed to contact dermatitis--which I still have.
After 7 years of allergy shots I'm a changed woman, and still no food allergies.
