Litter box crazies

So Galen has two behaviors involving the litterbox and I wonder if anyone else has had cats who do that, or know why he does it.
The first drives me bonkers. He doesn't just scrape in the box, he plays in it. He scrabbles all around and tosses litter everywhere, even after it was just cleaned. He'll spend like, five minutes doing this, thus getting litter and waste all over the room. Why does he do that? how can I make him stop? I got one litter box with the cover on it, but my other cat doesn't like it, he only uses uncovered boxes and he has urinary issues (struvite crystals) so I want to make it as easy as I can for him to pee.

The other thing he does is just silly, and I wonder if anyone has a cat who does this. After he uses the box, he proceeds to run madly all around the apartment, jump up on things, look around with big black eyes, and then dash off in another direction. Galen, I love you, but you're weird.

Buddy plays in the litter box too. I gave up trying to get him to stop. Maybe someone has some suggestions.

As for the tearing around after using the box, thats totally normal. Ours do it too. I guess its like they feel better after relieving themselves and get a second wind or something.

Agree with above...... your kitty, not so crazy. Maia use to do more digging, but she grew out of it for the most part, still loves to make a mess! I have her litter in a cubby area I built with a curtain because of this....And yes she runs around like a maniac after she uses the kitty loo!

Okay, I died laughing reading this because you just described all my cats to a tee
Kuan Yin is my weird litter box roller. I never figured it out. I just sigh and tell her "I don't go swimming in the toilet" One thought I had is she wants to rub her smell all over everything? But really, I think she's just weird.

And, okay, the tearing around thing I noticed everytime someone has a movement. Me and my boyfriend's theory is they are lighter after they poop so they are testing how much more aerodynamic they are.

That's the best I've got so far as explanations go

Both my cats scratch excessively, and my kitten hits the ground running like a greyhound

Lilly digs and digs in the litter box. I've gotten up in the morning to find the bathroom has been turned into a giant sandbox. I think she's trying to dig her way to China.

Hurley is my cat that runs a course after he goes potty. He just freaks out and runs and runs. LOL

My Kismet is also an avid digger and yup he goes on a wild man tear after a poo lol I always yell out in a goofy voice "WILD MANNNNN!" which he loves lol

I got Kismet at the start of winter when my windows were CLOSED. Spring is coming and with it - open windows - I shudder to think what my neighbors will think of me and my odd little yells/voices/sillyness etc with Kismet.

HAHAHAA!!! My cats do this too!!! Especially Shalimar, the younger one. But they do all run like crazy especially after doing a "number two".

BOTH of my kittens play in the litter box. There isn't anything I can do to keep them out of it either, because they will just do it when I'm not around. They also do this weird ritual of peeing several times (like 7) in different areas of the litter box. It's not only very loud but very messy! I'll probably end up buying a better litter box that is covered soon.

Your cat isn't all that strange. You should see mine!

Luna will sometimes try to block Midnight from getting in the litter box. She doesn't cover, Midnight will jump in and cover for her. Midnight won't go to the litter box alone. He either takes a toy with him, or he'll take Luna with him. Midnight will lay in the litter box, and roll around in the litter, or he'll curl up and try to sleep in there. He'll builds gigantic mounds, when he first came here, he built mounds bigger than him!
