Had a bad scare this morning

I started having chest pains at work and I spent the better part of the morning in the ER thinking it was my heart and thankfully the doctor said it was something with my stomach and esophagus caused gerd. I can't remember the spelling of the disease right now I was out most of the day because of my meds. And they want me to call a family prac tomorrow and follow up. They laughed at me when they gave me the morphine I told them I was expecting to see pink elephants. I came home and Pixie was all over her mommy but I crashed hard. So tomorrow I will get an appointment and maybe get a stress test.

For gerd (which is really bad heartburn and reflux disease) I think an endoscopy is usually ordered, which is not horrible, I hear.

I hope you feel better soon!

Gary's got GERD, and has had a bunch of endoscopies. They're uncomfortable, but not bad. What he's needed to control his is Protonix (which the generic is now available OTC) - just in a higher dose than normally recommended 2x a day.

The doctor has started me on nexium to try and combat my G.I. issues and if it doesn't help I will have to get a scope done. I was wondering do they put you to sleep when they do that? She also tested my thyroid and did a tard? test and said she would call me with the results. Thank you all for the well wishes.

I don't know much about Gerd, but at least you weren't having a heart attack!

Lots of that it's sorted out quickly.

Gail, I've been on Nexium myself, and it really helped me a lot. Hopefully, some meds are all you'll need to be comfortable with the gerd. Good luck, sweetie!

Soo glad it wasn't a heart issue! I have severe GERD and it does't normally bother me at all as long as I take my medicine when I'm supposed to. My doctors tried me out on a couple of medicines, the best combination for me seems to be Zegerid and a daily probiotic. I hope you feel better soon! (Oh, and to answer your question, I've had several scopes done and my GI doctor always puts me under anestesia.)

GERD stands for "Gastroesophageal reflux disease". Basically your stomach liquid contents and acid coming back up into the esophagus causing a burning sensation.

The reflux of the stomach's liquid contents into the esophagus occurs in most normal individuals. Reflux occurs as frequently in normal individuals as it does in people with GERD. However, for those with GERD, the refluxed liquid contains acid more often, and the acid remains in the esophagus longer

It's quite uncomfortable, but can be managed with antacid type medications such as "Ranitidine (aka Zantac)" which can now be bought over the counter in pharmacies. Other popular medications by prescription are: Omeprazole, Prilosec, Rabeprazole, plus there are others.

To try to answer your question about why they put you under for the scope, I would guess it's because it would be pretty uncomfortable otherwise. Your gag reflex would be driving you crazy, at least, I know mine would!
