Pink Floyd blasphemy?!?

You may have heard that Roger Waters is doing a big live "The Wall" tour. No David Gilmour, of course, since they don't get along at all.

So, who's the guitar soloist? Another David, Dave Kilminster. And...oh, my goodness...he's doing it on a Telecaster!

Comfortably Numb

pink floyd is one of my all time favorite groups but i am just not too crazy about these solo concerts, pink floyd is not the same without either one.

i never saw the original Pink Floyd live but i saw the Dave Gilmore tour he did a few years ago w/Richard Wright.
if i had to choose between Gilmore & Waters i'd pick Gilmore. that man can play a guitar

When did Gilmour bail? They started together last summer. I thought the re-union was a good idea, then lost interest when there wasn't to be a concert close enough to drive to.

can´t believe it.......

I saw the Roger Waters - The Wall concert in DC in October and the Comfortably Numb solo blew everyone away. It was incredible. I saw Pink Floyd in concert years ago (Gilmore but not Waters) and the Waters concert was every bit as good.

Roger Waters is a genius and his lyrics are part of my life's soundtrack.

Haha, well, at least it's a Fender!

I still don't get what the big deal is. Kilminster has played with him for a while now, he's a good guitarist.

If people can't get along there's no point in faking it and possibly having issues mid tour then cancelling or ruining shows people already paid to see. If you don't like the line up, don't go to the shows.

Many of the bands I listen to have had line up changes, broke up, or had members die... you can't stop time.

I tend to agree. I know the Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall like the back of my hand. Any guitarist worth anything should be able to play any of those solos. I've heard the Australian Pink Floyd in concert, and it was awesome. I love David Gilmour, and he totally invented those solos, but listening to another guitar player playing them doesn't make me feel like a hypocrit.

Actually, I was joking.

Kilminster does a great job, and he freely says he is playing an exact transcription of Gilmour's work, just as Pink Floyd without Waters did an exact transcription of Waters' work.

The big joke was the Stratocaster/Telecaster thing. Very different guitars, and most guitarist who play one don't play the other. A little bit of guitar snobism going on, because obviously, if you turned your back, you couldn't tell the difference.

I guess I didn't get the guitar joke since people that pay for their guitars sometimes do have both along with others. What you see in bigger bands tends to be from sponsoring...(And then the private collections still have many different guitars)

But yes, in the hands of a talented player who knows how to get the sound they want you're not going to hear much of a difference from similar guitars. (I say similar because there's some that really do sound distinctive and are only good for specific genres)

Most guitarists who have an endorsement deal played that particular guitar first, then got the deal. That's true of Steve Vai, George Bensen, and Joe Satriani (all Ibanez endorsers); Eric Johnson, Yngvie Malmsteen, and Stevie Ray Vaughan (all Fender endorsers); Zak Wylde, Ace Frehley, and Slash (all Gibson endorsers); and I could go on about Gretsch (Chet Atkins), PRS (Carlos Santana), Carvin (Joe Walsh), and many others.

It's funny how each guy thinks his brand is best. By the way, many of those players play guitars from other manufacturers for specific uses.

Of course for specific uses... But still, have you walked into any of these musicians houses and can clearly say what they do and do not have in their private collections? (of course many non-mainstream metal musicians are easier to get to talk about this sort of stuff and happily get into discussions of their collections, so that in part is where I'm getting some of this. If they have the money and space, they have varied collections - especially those into prog/experimental stuff)

I don't think the snubbery that some assume is there really exists for many. Take yourself for example, I'm sure you have some you'd really really like to have, but you likely wouldn't turn down a good guitar just because it's not the one you wish you could have.

I know, right? I'm pretty sure Gilmour plays a Strat? But if I remember correctly, for the second solo in Money, he had to play a Lewis 24-fret guitar to get the high notes! (?) this is off the top of my head, on Monday morning LOL.
