If anyone might know..

Does a person need to be a certified or licensed pet care provider (like, for example, a foster parent or licensed shelter) in order to place pets up for adoption on PetFinder?
I've been seriously thinking about placing my ferals/strays up for adoption on PetFinder because I haven't had much luck with the local shelters, etc. in this area - nor in finding them good homes, either. I've looked around some at PetFinder, but from what I've been able to determine it seems as if you need to be involved in some kind of organization before you can place pets up for adoption. I'd really love to be able to provide homes for as many strays as possible, and with spring right around the corner, I know that there will be more babies fixin' to come soon which will also need good homes. I really can't take in anymore myself: I'm already at my limit having eleven.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, I believe you need to have non-profit status before you can get a petfinder account. Talk to a few cat rescue places in your area (that already have petfinder accounts), and ask if they'll do a courtesy listing for you.

You can also use petfinder classifieds. Don't need an account for that.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Yes, you need to be some kind of organization, you also need a vet reference, and you have to get them a copy of your adoption contract.

But as pointed out, you can use the classifieds as an individual.

I like the get-someone-else-to-post-it idea, if you know anyone at a local rescue.

You might try contacting some of your local rescues and see if anyone of them would be willing to post your adoptable cats as courtesy listings on their Petfinder page. Several of the groups/shelters around here will do that for independent rescuers as long as the cats are fixed, tested, vaccinated etc...and the individual is responsible and provides good care for the cats. They just make it clear that the cat is a courtesy listing. Some prefer that adoption go through the person who has listed the kitty in question. Others handle it as though it's a regular adoption through their organization, with the application, contract and fee going directly to them.

You could try contacting 1 of the local shelters in your area, asking if they could post on Petfinder.com for you? They might, if you explain your situation to them.

You don't have to be non-profit per se, but there are guidelines you have to meet. I know of groups on Petfinder that are in the process of getting their non-profit status. (You can also look into being a fiscal sponsorship.) Here is more information on being non-profit from Petfinder. I have been monitoring the progress of a group nearby as they get a non-profit status set up, work on getting registered w/ Petfinder, etc. The president of the group is someone I know & while it isn't easy - it seems to be paying off for them.

Here is a link to Petfinder's Classifieds if you wish to go that route.

While Petfinder is the largest, there are also other website in which you can list adoptable pets. IMO none of them compare to Petfinder, but any exposure is better than none, right?

The shelter here does Courtesy Postings for people. Some groups will list the pet on Petfinder w/ your contact info & the adoption goes through you. Here when we do courtesy postings the adoption must go through us (that's just our policy). The same adoption application, adoption contract, & adoption fee applies to courtesy postings as pets @ our shelter.

IMO you are better off getting you listing with as local of a group as you can - but if you don't have any luck w/ the local groups try broadening your search some.

If you have any more specific questions I can try to answer, shoot me a PM.

I'm not sure I'm understanding the PetFinder's classified option.
Does that mean you can put any stray/feral up for adoption, or only pets that are your own that you are trying to find homes for?

Regarding the qualifications of having them all spayed/neutered and having their shots up to date, I don't have the funds available to do that. I can barely keep up with my own - especially since Randall's been sick and having been in the hospital so much the past year or so. It really hurt us financially when all the furkids (except BlackJack) got sick with a horrible strain of URI last September.
We really would have been in a bind if my vet hadn't been kind enough to let me run a bill.

There is a local vet who will do the spay/neuter/shots thing for a minimal fee, but as I said, finances are really tight right now. We really don't have the extra money even for that..

My understanding is anyone can post pets they are trying to find a home for in the Petfinder classifieds.
