Anyone give their cat lysine?

Thread Starter
The vet suggested trying lysine for one of our cats' chronic sneezing. She suggested a dose to give, but didn't make any specific product suggestions. I know there are several options available for cats now, from powders to paste to treats. Does anyone have any specific feedback on what's worked or what hasn't worked for your cats?

Thanks

I put some in their water bowl. I think about a tablespoon for a half-gallon bowl, so not really a set dose. I use the NOW powder and it dissolves very nicely, and does not appear to have a bad taste.

Two of my cats are on Lysine 250 mg/day. I use the NOW powder and bought it on Amazon. Very reasonable. If the cat is sneezing, which Pipsqueak has some issues, I start the initial dose at 500 mg/ per day ( 1/4 tsp.) for seven days and then go to the maintenance dose of 250 mg./day (1/8 tsp.). Lately, I have been giving it to all of my cats because I volunteer at a shelter and even though I change clothes and disinfect myself when I get home, I think the Lysine just helps them in case I were to bring a germ home.....

I use Viralys gel for my cats. It's easy to give and many of them like it. It's not super cheap but if you are just giving it to one or two cats it's not bad. A 5oz tube costs in between $9 and $12. 5oz lasts about 60 days if you give 500mg/day.
I either mix it in with their food or give it to them with an oral syringe. It's flavored so most of them don't mind getting it squirted in their mouths and that way you're sure that they get it all.
Entirelypets.com sell Viralys for a good price.

I give my Kismet Lysine - we use a gel that has beefy flavor in it. I find when he doesn't have it for a few days he starts to get his sneezing back - so we use it as a preventative. The gel is about 20.00 and lasts us about a month... but it's worth the money as it does work like a charm. I buy it from my vet office down the street.

I use it and put it directly into their water. Having 4 FIV cats it's a must for me and beneficial for the cats. I've noticed that when I run out they seem to have more problems picking up URIs. The L-Lysine helps to keep their FIV related health problems under control. I get mine from Amazon: it's the cheapest I've found.

I started giving my two kitties L-Lysine after it was recommended to me by various TCS members. My new kitty came with URI and we wanted him to get better and prevent the resident kitty from catching the URI. I started with 500 mg each and then brought it down to 250mg. Since I could not wait for amazon to deliver the powder, I went to CVS and bought some from there and also bought a pill crusher. I mix it with their food in the morning.

We give Hannah lysine everyday, twice a day because of her herpes. We use the NOW powdered kind. A 1/4 teaspoon is equal to approx. 500 mg. I also give Tumbles some when he gets eye boogers from stress. We buy ours online at Amazon and it lasts a long time. You can get the tablets in the supplements section and crush them. I mix it in wet food. It dissolves easily and has no taste.

If you give lysine, be sure to give it twice a day so that it stays in their system.

My Mattie has herpes. She has an eye that drains. She gets a 500 mg. pill in each of her two feedings every day. I crush it and mix it with her wet food.
