New (older) cat and residents

This is the story. I've got 2 kitties. Sneaky's 10 and Holly is 1.

My next-door neighbor moved his sister here. Don't want to get into why. The thing is- she's got this 10 year old cat that also moved here. She didn't want to give it up, but yet couldn't take care of him (his backside is a mess because he pulled out all of his fur due to fleas). She was going to have him in her apt- but that apt fell through so now she's got one where no pets are allowed.

Neighbor is allergic. Asked us to take him in. Really didn't want to b/c I've already got 2 and I think that's PLENTY. But we did. Yesterday. And I REALLY couldn't say no when she gave me the paperwork and told me that he's now up-to-date on shots, and they're giving us another 6 month supply of flea treatment. And I have 16 lbs of cat food, a zillion toys, a half-dozen bags of treats, and this Drinkwell fountain that freaks my 2 cats out

The "girls" are not happy. He's not happy. I let him in and he's currently hiding under the couch- and I can't get him.

I don't have the luxury of a separate room. We could put him in the garage. BUT- he's also declawed in the front (not our doing- that's how he came) so we don't want him getting out. Which would mean we can't open the garage at all- but we go in and out of it since the garbage cans are outside the back garage door. The "girls" have claws, and I'm more worried about them hurting him than him hurting the girls.

Right now when we're home I'm letting everyone run the house. This morning when I went out- Holly went into the garage- Sneaky went into our room, and "new kitty" (name is Jasper) was under the couch. And he's still there. Do you think he'll eventually come out today? He's had a whole lot of change over the last couple of weeks. An 18 hour ride in a car- 2 days shut in the laundry room with a dog outside the door (neighbors have a dog that we watched) and then he came here.

He may not come out today, or much for the next few days. I know you said separation was impossible inside, but can you separate him in a bathroom? Even if it's a half bath, the small size will help ease him into your home gradually. A big closet would work too, since even a closet is bigger than the space under a couch.

Well- I put him back in the garage. I opened the door- put him down on his blanket beside the cage he came over in- and then he ran and hid in the corner. Poor kitty.

But he hasn't gone to the litterbox all day- nor has he eaten anything. I'm not worried about him wasting away, the paperwork my neighbor gave me had him weighing in at 16lbs! I've picked him up and he's HUGE. I think he'd be more willing to eat something and use the box if he's in the garage. That's where he stayed last night and the food dissapeared from the dish that dd gave him.

Then it sounds like he is okay in the garage. He'll probably decide on his own when to leave this safe "room" and begin exploring the rest of the house.
