My 1.5 year old neutered indoor only cat has started vomiting food every day. He's vomiting up food, not hairballs. I wouldn't be so worried if it was just a hairball.

He vomited again on our bed last night at 2am, and that was not fun. This started about 2 weeks ago, and we took him in to see the vet since this is highly unusual for him. The vet could not determine what was wrong, just a stomach bug perhaps and we should just wait it out. He said there was no bowel obstruction, no worms, his temperature was normal. Our cat was given fluids and an anti vomiting drug and went home with us.

He has IBD, diagnosed by our vet from cronic diarrhea about a year ago. He has been on a prescription diet of Royal Canine Green Pea and Rabbit and hasn't had a single episode of diarrhea since then. We are very careful not to let him eat anything besides his food, terrified it will trigger his diarrhea again. So unless he developed an allergy to his current food, its not his food that is causing this vomiting If it is an allergy to his current food, I don't know what he'll eat since he is allergic to everything on the face of the earth. Every other food makes him have diarrhea, even some of the prescription foods gave him the runs too.

We are really are at our wits end here with this cat. $1000+ in vet bills in the past year alone. Then another $200 the other day for the emergency vet visit and the meds. Plus he eats the really expensive prescription food $35 for a 6 lb bag. I seriously do not have the money to keep doing these expensive vet visits. We've already had to severely adjust our lifestyle to keep this cat. But if the vomiting continues, we may have to turn him over to the breeder. I really want to keep him, but DH says cat has to go if the cat keeps doing this. I can see where he is coming from, and I am torn between husband and cat. Just a crappy situation all around no matter how you look at it.

Just to give you a perspective - I've spent $1000 in the last few months alone on my cat, and well over $4000 over her whole lifetime. I know that not every one can afford that (heck, I really can't), but just know you're not alone. My cat has also been eating prescription food for the past 6ish years.

With something like IBD, once you get it under control, I'd guess that the vet bills and stress will decrease. Honestly, I might be looking for another vet if I were you - IBD can't really be 100% diagnosed just by saying that the cat has chronic diarrhea so it's very possible your cat has something else going on. Has your vet done bloodwork at all?

Why does your husband want to give up the cat - because of the vet bills or the hassle of the vomiting?

Sorry for your cat being sick. It sounds like the food has cleared up the diarrhea, but the vomiting continues, and you are now short on money. But, I would gather up the cat's medical file and get another opinion if you can. Also, is the cat vomiting just after eating?? or just at random times during the day, is it always food, or clear, foamy liquid sometime? I wish I could help more, but it sounds like the IBD is not under control yet, and it can be easily treated it just takes the right food.
for you kitty to feel better.
