I took my cat to the vets on Wednesday because he had started going to the toilet in our bath ans sink but the urine had blood in it. They gave us pro-kolin for him to take twice a day for 7 days however, after researching this medicine it seems that it is for issues with diarrhea. Why has my vet given me this? My cat is still going to the toilet in the bath and it is still mainly blood. He is trying to go to the toilet quite a lot but he can only manage a drop each time, he's also licking himself in this area more than usual. Should the pro-kloin help with this issue at all?

Any help much appreciated as I am very worried about my cat!

Your vet gace you a probiatic with an antidiarrheal for blood in the urine? Are you sure it's pro-kolin you got? I'm not a vet but that makes no sense whatsoever to me. Was that all you got? probiatics or kaolin and pectin would have no effect on urinary issues. It helps intestinal problems. Either there has been a misunderstanding somewhere or your vet is an idiot.

I strongly recommend taking this cat to another vet asap. Blood in the urine can be serious and it sounds like your cat is very uncomfortable, maybe in pain. The vet has to confirm what is causing the bleeding in order to provide the correct treatment. Did your vet do any kind of urine analysis?
I would recommend not waiting to take your cat in. It could be an emergency. Is there an emergency vet in your area or one that is open on weekends?

Exactly what Ziggy's Mom said- this sounds very serious to me... I would suggest that you take him to another vet immediately. Did the vet do any kind of tests at all or give you any information about what the cause of the bloody urine could be?

I hope everything turns out ok, keep us posted!

Yes to everything that the posters have said.

No urinalisys? He cannot go? Sounds like it could be crystals and he could very well be blocked. A blocked cat is a cat that is in desperate need of correct vet care. Males are prone to this. I have one now and had another a few years ago. Special food will be needed if this is the case. He may have to be chathed and flushed. Like I said, this is not a wait and see deal.

Please take him to another vet today. A cat that cannot urinate can suffer kidney failure and worse very quickly. It needs to be addressed immediately.

Please take him in and have a urinalysis done ....... today.

I am going through the same thing right now.
I took my Tom yesterday because he was lethargic, no appetite and had blood in his urine.
They told me that I had taken him just in time.
He was obstructed and they are putting a catherer(?) to relieve him.
I chose to have him hospitalized for the weekend.
They told me that he will make it but right now, I am so nervous.
Please take him to another vet as soon as possible!

I think you should take him to another vet for a second opinion!

Thank you for all your help and messages.

I have taken him back to the vet and seen someone else. They tried to take a sample from his bladder but he was too fidgety to get some but she said that it all feels normal and not too inflamed. She gave him two injections, one for the pain and one as an anti-inflammatory, she also gave us some tablets to take twice a day.

She didn't want to keep him in just yet as his temperature is fine, he's still eating and playing around but she is going to see him again first thing in the morning and keep him in all day to get a sample of his urine. She's also given me her mobile number in case of an emergency and in case I just want to ask her some more questions.

So I'm feeling a bit better about it all now.

Thank You!

Alex
