I talk to my girls all the time. They will sometimes talk to me, depending on their moods. When Dusty is under the covers and I touch her through the blanket, she will mew in protest!

In this home, it goes both ways! I definitely talk to Maia all the time, and very often she talks back to me with chirps. When she is in the mood for a chat, she calls me, and keeps calling till I respond! She definitely understands a lot and she has several different vocals herself that for the most part I understand........

jericho is the same way! he is whiney as well. he loves being in the bathroom and hates to leave so he will roll around while im getting ready or cleaning and as soon and as i say "alright lets go" he does a whiney meow that is something like a little kid saying "nooo mommmmmm" as pathetic as possible of course haha. but he will respond to me when i talk to him about going for a ride or when i ask if he wants some food.

I talk to all of my cats all of the time!
I talk to them just like I would anyone else. Imhotep though is the one I have the most "conversations" with. He always looks me right in the eyes when I talk to him and constantly meows back.

Speedboat was my talker. He answered everytime someone spoke to him. I miss him terribly as he was my lapcat too.

I talk to them. However, whenever I start talking to one, others come running, and soon I'm having to pet, talk, brush, or whatever 3 or 4 of them. I have a lot of inter-cat jealousy going at my house.

I've always found that my cats like to be sung to, especially if the song is about them. I make up the songs (spontaneously) and am sure to include their names in them a lot.

It was interesting to me that when I got Tonya in September she was totally silent. I was concerned that she didn't have a voice at all. I talked to her former foster father (who works at the shelter where I got her and who had her home with him for a few months nearly 2 years before) and he said he had her before she was spayed, and she was in heat and yelled her fool head off. Slowly she started vocalizing, I suppose in response to me talking to her.

They all will answer me if I talk to them, or even look at them too long. However, they are mostly quiet with each other, unless they are complaining to each other. And they complain to me about each other, too.

Cindy didn't get the nickname "Chatty Cat" by accident! And there's no question that she understands when we speak to her in whole sentences, especially when she's campaigning for a scritch, which she prefers to have delivered on our bed. I'll say something like "OK, but give Mum a minute, I just have to [insert task] first -- won't be long, promise", and there she is waiting at the door when I come back, to herd me into the bedroom. Fawn's conversations tend to be with Daddy, and more often than not on the subject of treats, namely how few of them she's had lately

Miss Patchwillow is the only one who talks back to me, though, and she doesn't do it very often. Guess I just have a quiet bunch. Well, make that nonverbal. They aren't exactly quiet when they're drag racing through the house. More like a demolition derby.
All of them but Lazlo were silent until Flowerbelle meowed for a year. They put 2+2 together and started talking.

I do have conversations with Flowerbelle, though they're sign language, as she's deaf. We "chat" with her paw and my waving hand.

But I talk to them ALL the time. And like a bad mom, I talk to their Dad through them sometimes.

But they really don't talk back - though they do talk. They mostly ask for things* - though I'm sure they understand what I'm saying to them!

*The exceptions:

Chumley greets me every morning, and we have a lovely "head grooming" ritual.

Lazlo is an alien and communicates with the mothership.

Billy frequently talks to himself.

I talk to Holland ALL the time. I was blessed with a silent cat. She doesn't meow for anything, she is the quietest creature I have ever known. HOWEVER... in the morning and at night, I can ask her one of two questions that will elicit a response about 90% of the time: Are you hungry? Do you want to eat? Those are the only things I say to her that ever get a verbal response...

Playing with Jazzy & Ginga.
Yes, I talk to both of my girls. I can mimic Ginga but it hurts my voice
I've tried mimicing Jazzy but that never works. I always get responses when talking to them though

I miss my deep conversations with Bella. She was deaf and not much of a talker but would respond to me by touching my cheek or my hand.
She was so smart! I had taught her a couple words in sign language which she picked up quickly. She couldn't hear my words but certainly knew my expressions and energy.

Yes I do talk to Pixie quite a bit, my sis thinks I am crazy, and she tends to be a bit chatty at times.

That Rosie! Life is very interesting with that little girl in the house!

DH and I talk to our kids all the time. About everything: the weather, what they might like for lunch or dinner. Do they want Sip (well, that's a stupid question!). DH will tell Mollipop to "go find Mom" and she'll come running back to the bedroom or the computer room. Then when she finds me, she'll start to meow.
And when I'm cooking in the kitchen, Mollipop is usually sitting on a chair to su-purr-vise what I'm doing. I'll talk to her and she talks back.

Oh, and we also have to spell certain words: l-u-n-c-h, t-r-e-a-t, S-i-p, D-a-B-i-r-d, to name just a few. Those kids know exactly what those words mean. One night DH and I were talking about Hallween and I said, "trick or treat" and the cats came running to the kitchen. If I'm on the phone talking to a GF, I even spell l-u-n-c-h because it's easier to spell the word than it is to deal with six "starving" cats. (One day, my co-worker and I were trying to figure out where to go for lunch and I spelled the word out by accident....he looked at me and started laughing. He has a cat; he understands.)

And when I need to do a head count, I'll just holler "Treat!" and they call come running. Meowing the whole time because, they're all starving.
