debating on dying my hair

I have noticed my hair has darkened a lot over the past few months and it is driving me crazy! I have read a few reviews with Clairol foam and am thinking about trying it! I am thinking about going light blonde with it. But I didnt know how long it would last! I had red high lights put in in December, but I'm pretty sure the chick put the wrong kind in... I wanted permanent but I think she put semi, so now my hair is back to being bleh.

Current color

Color it used to be! (Junior Prom) And yes that is the same BF as I have now

Anyone have any suggestions or opinions?

I have my hair colored a dark red(it was naturally auburn before it turned mousie grey). Red is a hard color to maintain when you color it. It fades. I would imagine red highlights would be the same way. I am to scared to color my hair myself so I have it professionally done.

Yeah I know red is a hard color. Although I had them last summer too but they lasted about 6 weeks, these lasted about 3...
Thats kind of why I am thinking just a couple shades lighter blonde! Just get back to the color I used to be! I like being a blonde, not kinda brownish!

I don't know about Clairol foam, but I had good luck with L'Oreal Natural Match Hair Color to get my hair several shades lighter. Unfortunately it's no longer being made but I found some places online to buy it. My hair was similar to yours in color and I had the same issue-- it got darker and I wanted to lighten it back to where it used to be. My hair also gets quite a bit lighter on its own in the summer, due to the sun.
However, if you want to go to light blonde or more than a few shades lighten than your current color you usually need to bleach your hair first.

I'm trying something different now, John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Controlled Lightening Spray. I'm trying it out on my roots since it's been a few months since I used the hair coloring, and if that works I'm going to try it on the rest of my hair and see how it works...

I would say go for it! Sometimes a change is a wonderful thing and a change in hair colour can be uplifting!

However, instead of a single colour, I would advise on a colour with some highlights. It's amazing what highlights can do. I've been colouring my hair for years and in 2009 I decided to try some highlights as well. I was amazed at how much better the colour looked when highlights were added.

My advice is to go to a hair salon and get it done professionally. Sometimes home dye jobs don't always turn out like you expect them too. This is especially true when it comes to a colour plus highlights.

My motto is, it's only hair, and it will grow out. So experimenting is fun!

Sounds a little like that old product called "Sun In" where you sprayed it into your hair and it literally bleached it gradually, in the sun. I knew friends who tried it and their hair ended up like straw. If that is what this "John Frieda" product does, I would say to avoid it.

No color lasts "permanently" - I've been doing red for a few years and hubby wanted it back to blonde again (my natural color). Unfortunately the red has darkened it more then normal and I need to redo mine too - is now dark on top and nice blonde on the rest.

I would say go back to blonde

As a guy's opinion, go darker for a proper brunette or lighter blonde as you had it. From what my sister tells me, who is also naturally a "dirty blonde" is that darker is more permanent than lighter and so less work.

Same here. Premature gray runs in my family and I've been dying my hair for years. Just because I'm a grandma doesn't mean I have to LOOK like one! Reddish dye does have a tendency to fade faster however.

My mom used that stuff once and all her hair got like straw and started to fall out.

I would say go for it if you want to change your hair color. If you don't like the results, you can always change it back or try something else.

Remember the color on the box is not what the color might end up as.

I have dark brown hair and tried to dye mine a soft, dark, brown and it turned out jet black. No highlights just this all over black.

I was told to go a couple shades lighter than the box says.

This I agree with. In my opinion, you look beautiful with both darker hair, and lighter, but it sounds like you want to play with the lighter side of you (as I have too) so just go for it and try out the new foam formulas with a light shade. If it's too light, you can always tone it down and darken it a shade or 2. Professional highlighting is great also, but does not fit in my budget, don't know about yours, so that is also a fun option too if you can afford!

Hmmmm didn't I post a picture earlier? I am confused!

My regular color is brown. I've been blond, dark red, and black. I like the black best, and have been dying it black for years.

The color I got was light ash blonde I believe. Turned out great, and was super easy to use. It was Loreal Excellence creme. We will see how long the color last but I love that it is closer to what I used to be! I will try to get some decent pictures tomorrow with it style!

I am in between blonde and brunette too- I was dark blonde when I was younger but it got darker eventually...I really want to dye my hair either darker or lighten it a bit, but I have been growing my hair for ages, and I want it to be healthy so I'm afraid of damage from the dye- also that's always an issue when you're doing it at home. Of course, that's not to say that professional people always know what they're doing
I think you would look better if you go darker, because I think darker hair looks better on people who are more tan and you look pretty tan in the pictures, but that's just my opinion.

thank you! Its funny because I feel very pale right now! I hate winter! LOL! I have very light blue eyes and I feel like the dark hair made them look odd so thats why I decided on the blonde. Plus i have always called myself blonde lol! My hair feels super shiny and does feel nice and soft. But it still has a slight smell to it from the dye but nothing too major! The only thing I noticed is that it is staticy but that is most likely to just be from sleeping on it last night and not using any shampoo in it this morning just conditioned to get rid of some of it!
It was super easy to do! It came with a pre-dye conditioner that you put on the ends before you dye it to help the dye absorb and then you just mixed the 2 coloring parts together and let it sit for up to 30 minutes. (I left it between 25-30) And then just use the provided conditioner in the shower after and once a week between colorings. I like the color a lot but I may go a shade lighter next time. Gary said I should go platinum but not sure about that! I dont want to look like a cast member from Jersey Shore when I end up tan for the summer! LOL!

Your hair looks great! My hair is naturally brown, and I never plan on dyeing it.

My hair is odd! I was born with black hair and it all fell out after my surgery when I was 1 week. Then it grew back and I was a very light blonde like most of my family all the way through high school. And then a year or 2 back it started getting a little darker. But I put red lowlights in it last summer and early this year. But I have gotten rather discouraged with the color it was and decided I didnt want to be mousy brown! I do love brown hair though, just not on me!

I like it - looks nice

my hair is naturally a medium brown but i died it black in november. it hasn't faded one bit but my roots are growing back. i guess i will just have to leave them alone because i don't want to dye it again.

Yeah my hair is weird too.. When I was really young it was light blonde, then it darkened to dark blonde. Then it started getting reddish highlights when I was in high school, and in the winter it would get darker to more brownish and in the summer it would turn blonde again! Since my hair was really long it ended up with weird bands/stripes because the hair that grew in the winter was always darker than the hair from the summer. Finally I just dyed it all over dark blonde to get rid of the 'stripes'. Now it's dark blonde but I dyed some sections underneath purple.

My hair is very dark brown, almost black. My daughter made me promise I would not let it go gray, and fortunately Natural Instincts 31 is the perfect color for me. I do my roots every 4-6 weeks, depending on how lazy I am feeling. I am letting it grow long again, and it is approaching waist length. I never thought it would get that long again. It is kind of weird that people always want to touch it when they get in the back seat of my cab. I almost never allow it.
I kept it red and bobbed for awhile, but it just didn't suit me. I love the look of red hair on other people, though.
That is a beautiful shade of blonde in your second pic, very natural looking.
