Sliding paws on smooth cabinet

Thread Starter
My male cat - about 3 years old has suddenly began obsessively sliding his paws on the cabinets. He is not declawed.
He has never done this before and it doesn't seem playful. I am wondering if it is a call for more attention - which I feel he gets lots of but he is now competing with a 2 year old. I checked his paws and nothing seems to be irritated. It has become a nonstop occurence and is concerning me. He doesn't act sick either.

Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you.

If he's declawed and doing the front paw slide-slide-slide he's probably marking territory. Declawed cats still like to mark like any other, but no longer really have a preference for "scratching" objects that sharpen their claws at the same time.

I have one de-clawed cat (he came that way), and he "scratches" the weirdest things! I suppose because he doesn't have the tactile response of his claws catching on something, any surface that feels good on his paws will do. Or, one of my males (not de-clawed) will do that to any door he wants to get through (not scratching; he keeps his claws in. Better described as "sliding", I guess). Maybe there's something in the cabinet your cat wants?

My female cat does the same thing. I think she just likes the feel of it. She usually does it just before she starts batting something around the room so I think it's a sort of warm up for play.
